Ryhmälähetys (multicast) tarkoittaa tietoliikenteessä joukko-, moni- tai ryhmälähetystä. Siinä multicast-kehys lähetetään yhdeltä monelle. Kohdejoukko on tietty erikseen määritelty ryhmä, johon vastaanottajat voivat halutessaan liittyä. Multicastia käytetään erityisesti videoneuvotteluissa, työryhmäohjelmissa ja IPTV-sovelluksissa, koska se on tehokkaampi kuin useat singlecast-lähetykset (unicast).

IP-verkkojen ryhmälähetys

Ryhmälähetyksellä voidaan välittää yksittäinen tietovirtaa kerralla monelle, jopa usealle tuhannelle vastaanottajalle ja näin vähentää IP-verkkojen liikennettä. Ryhmälähetystä käytetään mm. videoneuvottelu- ja etäopetusyhteyksissä sekä ohjelmistojen ja uutisten jakelussa.[1]

Verkossa olevat laitteet voivat liittyä ryhmälähetysryhmiin, jolloin kyseisiin ryhmiin osoitettu liikenne välittyy ryhmään liittyneille laitteille.[1] Ryhmälähetys reitittimen yli aliverkkoihin vaatii, että reitittimessä on ryhmälähetyksen reititykseen tarkoitetun protokollan tuki.[2]
