Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus

Ringling Bros and Barnum & Bailey sirkuksen mainosjuliste, johon on kuvattu Ringlingin veljekset sekä P. T. Barnum ja James Anthony Bailey.

Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus on toukokuussa 2017 toimintansa lopettanut yhdysvaltalainen sirkusyhtiö, joka tunnetaan myös nimellä The Greatest Show on Earth. Yhtiö syntyi vuonna 1919, kun P. T. Barnumin ja James Anthony Baileyn vuonna 1881 perustama Barnum & Bailey Circus yhdistettiin Ringlingin veljesten vuonna 1884 perustettuun sirkukseen. Ringlingin veljekset olivat ostaneet Barnum & Baileyn jo Baileyn kuoltua vuonna 1906, mutta sirkukset toimivat erikseen, kunnes ne yhdistettiin vuonna 1919.[1]

Vuoteen 1956 asti sirkus toimi perinteisenä sirkusseurueena purettavine ja siirrettävine telttoineen ja junakuljetuksineen, mutta sen jälkeen se on esiintynyt kiinteillä esiintymispaikoilla, kuten urheilustadioneilla. Vuonna 1967 Ringlingin veljekset myivät sirkuksensa veljeksille Irvin ja Israel Feld, jotka puolestaan myivät sen vuonna 1971 leluyritys Mattelille, kunnes ostivat sen takaisin itselleen vuonna 1982. Vuonna 1984 sirkus tuli osaksi kansainvälistä Feld Entertainment -viihdeyritystä, jonka pääkonttori on Floridassa.

Vedoten laskeviin yleisömääriin ja korkeisiin käyttökustannuksiin Feld Entertainment ilmoitti tammikuussa 2017, että sirkuksen toiminta lopetetaan toukokuussa 146 toimintavuoden jälkeen. Kävijämäärät lähtivät nopeaan laskuun, kun sirkus luopui eläinten käytöstä esityksissään eläinsuojelujärjestöjen painostuksesta. Emoyhtiö Feld Entertainment jatkaa toimintaansa ja tuottaa muun muassa Disney on Ice -esityksiä.[2]

Viimeinen näytös pidettiin 21. toukokuuta 2017 New Yorkissa.[3]
