Narvan vesiputous

Narvanjoki haarautuu Kreenholmin saaren molemmille puolille.

Narvan vesiputous (vir. Narva juga tai ven. Нарвские водопады) sijaitsee Narvanjoessa yhteisesti vastarannoilla olevien Viron Narvan ja Venäjän Ivangorodin (vir. Jaanilinn) kaupungeissa. Vesiputous sijaitsee kohdassa, missä joki haarautuu ja virtaa Kreenholmin kummaltakin puolelta ohitse. Joen itäinen haara on 115–130 metriä leveä ja sen vesiputouksessa on pudotusta noin 6–7 metriä kohdasta riippuen. Itähaaran keskellä kulkee Venäjän ja Viron välinen raja. Joen läntinen haara on 60–70 metriä leveä ja siinä on pudotusta noin 3,5 metriä.[1][2]

Putouksen aiheuttaa Baltian klintti, joka alkaa Öölannin saaren läheltä, ylittää Pohjois-Viron seuraten sen rannikkoa ja jatkuu Venäjän Laatokalle asti. Narvanjoen kohdalla Pohjois-Eestin klintti vaihtaa nimeään Venäjän puolella Inkerinmaan klintiksi. Putouksien jälkeen on joessa kolmen kilometrin matkalla koskia.[1]

Joen korkeuseroa hyödyntää Venäjän puolella Narvanjoen vesivoimalaitos, joka rakennettiin vuonna 1955 ja jonka teho on 125 MW. Vesiputous on Jägalan vesiputouksen jälkeen Viron toiseksi korkein vesiputous. Vesiputous oli ennen voimalaitoksen käyttöönottoa vesimäärällä mitattuna Euroopan suurin.[2]
