Mikkelin varuskunta

Mikkelin varuskunta oli Mikkelin kaupungin alueella sijainnut varuskunta Savon Prikaatin lakkauttamiseen saakka. Se sijaitsi puurakenteisissa kasarmeissa vanhalla kasarmialueella Nuijamiehen kaupunginosassa lähellä kaupungin keskustaa.

Varuskunta perustettiin 1878 kun Suomeen säädettin asevelvollisuus. Mikkeliin sijoitettiin Suomen kuudes tarkk´ampujapataljoona. Vuosina 1901-1917 Mikkelissä oli venäläinen viides tarkk´ampujarykmentti. Suomen itsenäistyttyä kasarmeissa toimi Savon Prikaati. Mikkelissä oli päämaja sekä ensimmäisen että toisen maailmansodan aikana.[1]

1960-luvulla varuskunta siirrettiin asteittain uudelle alueelle Jyväskyläntien varrelle Karkialammelle, josta viimeiseksi Savon prikaati lakkautettiin kokonaan 2006 osana maavoimauudistusta. Savon prikaatin lakkauttamisen jälkeen Karkialammella toimii mm. Maavoimien Esikunta[2] sekä tietohallintoyksikkö ja sotilassoittokunta.

Vanhoissa puukasarmeissa toimii nykyään muun muassa Jalkaväkimuseo.[1]
