Kaledonia

Kaledonia (lat. Caledonia) on roomalaisten Britteinsaarten pohjoisosille antama nimi. Kaledoniaa asutti caledonien eli kaledonialaisten heimo, eivätkä roomalaiset koskaan saaneet sitä pysyvästi hallintaansa. Alue vastasi nykyistä Skotlantia.^[1] Kaledonialaiset lienevät olleet sama kelttiläisperäinen kansa, jota myöhemmin kutsuttiin pikteiksi^[2].

Roomalaiset valloittivat Kaledonian Agricolan johdolla noin vuonna 80, ja myöhemmin he voittivat pohjoisen heimot Mons Graupiuksen taistelussa. Roomalaiset perustivat legioonalaisille linnoituksen Inchtuthiliin sekä pienempiä linnakkeita strategisesti tärkeisiin soliin. Roomalaiset joutuivat kuitenkin vetäytymään kaikista varustuksistaan jo vuonna 90 ja lopulta Trajanuksen keisarikaudella koko Skotlannista. Roomalaiset pyrkivät ajoittain työntämään rajaa pohjoisemmaksi tämänkin jälkeen.^[1]

Kaledoniaksi määritellään usein Hadrianuksen vallin pohjoispuolinen osa Ison-Britannian saarta, toisinaan rajavalliksi nimetään pohjoisempana sijaitseva Antoninuksen valli. Nimitystä käytetään nykyään Skotlannin romanttisena ja runollisena vastineena. Kaledonian mukaan on nimetty muun muassa Uuden-Kaledonian saariryhmä ja monet yritykset, kuten skotlantilainen lentoyhtiö Caledonian Airways.
