Jonathan (kilpikonna)

Jonathan (s. noin 1832) on seychellienjättiläiskilpikonna, joka asuu Yhdistyneelle kuningaskunnalle kuuluvalla Saint Helenan saarella. Jonathanin tarkkaa syntyaikaa ei tiedetä, mutta sellaiseksi on merkitty 4. joulukuuta 1832.[1][2] Guinnessin ennätysten kirjan mukaan Jonathan on maailman vanhin elossa oleva maalla elävä eläin.[3] Jonathanin iäksi on myös veikattu yli 200.[4] Saaren eläinlääkäri tekee Jonathanille tarkastuksen viikoittain.[5]

Alkujaan Jonathan on Seychelleiltä. Saint Helenalle Jonathan saapui vuonna 1882 ollessaan noin 50-vuotias. Syynä muuttoon oli se, että Jonathan oli lahja William Grey-Wilsonille, josta tuli myöhemmin Saint Helenan kuvernööri. Nimen ”Jonathan” kilpikonna sai jossain vaiheessa 1930-luvulla kuvernööri Spencer Davisilta.[4][6]

Jonathanista on tullut kotisaarellaan erityisen tunnettu ja suoranainen maskotti. Jonathan on myös kuvattuna Saint Helenan punnan viiden sentin kolikossa.[5] Vuonna 2022, Jonathanin 190-vuotispäivän kunniaksi, Saint Helena ilmoitti julkaisevansa sarjan postimerkkejä Jonathanin kunniaksi.[7]

Jonathania on nimitetty biseksuaali-ikoniksi: sille on hankittu ystäviksi kaksi muuta kilpikonnaa, Emma ja Fred, joiden molempien kanssa Jonathan on yrittänyt paritella.[2][8]
