Indigo Girls on yhdysvaltalainen folk rock -duo, jonka muusikot ovat Amy Ray ja Emily Saliers.

Historia

Ray ja Saliers tutustuivat Laurel Ridgen peruskoulussa Decaturissa, Georgiassa ja alkoivat high school -aikana esiintymään duona nimellä Saliers & Ray. Myöhemmin he alkoivat B Band -nimellä esiintymään kykykilpailuissa ja open mic -tilaisuuksissa ympäri Atlantaa. Vuonna 1981 duo äänitti ensimmäisen demonsa Rayn kellarissa. Neljä vuotta esinnyttyään he alkoivat käyttää nimeä Indigo Girls ja julkaisivat ensimmäiset singlensä Atlantan radioasemille. Ensimmäinen albumi Strange Fruit julkaistiin pienmerkillä vuonna 1987. Vuotta myöhemmin yhtye kiinnitettiin Epic Recordsille. Alkuvuodesta 1989 single ”Closer to Fine” ja albumi Indigo Girls olivat menestyksiä ja toivat yhtyeelle ”Best Contemporary Folk Album” -luokassa Grammy-palkinnon. He olivat myös ehdolla parhaan uuden artistin palkinnon saajaksi (Milli Vanilli voitti).[1]

Indigo Girls levytti Epic/Sony Recordsille yhdeksän albumia, kunnes jättivät yhtiön vuonna 2007. He olivat lyhyen aikaa American Recordsilla kunnes perustivat oman levy-yhtiönsä IG Recordingsin. Amy Ray on levyttänyt myös soololevyjä ja hänellä on oma voittoa tavoittelematon, riippumaton levymerkki Daemon Records. Yhdessä Winona LaDuken kanssa Indigo Girls on perustanut hyväntekeväisyysjärjestön nimeltään Honor the Earth, jonka kautta he ovat käynnistäneet ympäristöön ja sosiaaliseen oikeudenmukaisuuteen liittyviä kampanjoita, joiden kohteena ovat olleet muun muassa Amerikan alkuperäiskansat.[1]
