François Arnail

François Arnail, Jaucourt’n markiisi[1], myöhemmin keisarikunnan kreivi,[2] (14. marraskuuta 1757 – 5. maaliskuuta 1852) oli ranskalainen aristokraatti ja poliitikko, jonka ura ulottui vallankumouksen alusta aina Ranskan toisen tasavallan aattoon. Hänen nimestään käytetään useita versioita, kuten François-Arnail[3] ja François Jaucourt.

François Arnail syntyi 14. marraskuuta 1757 ja lähti jo nuorena sotilasuralle. Vuosina 1788–1792 hän toimi 2. ratsuväen rykmentin everstinä. Sen lisäksi hän loi poliittisen uran toimien ensin Seine-et-Marnen departementin hallinnossa ja vuodesta 1791 alkaen lakiasäätävässä kokouksessa. Hän kuului Perustuslain ystäviin eli Club des Feuillantsiin ja koetti edistää yhdessä toisten samanmielisten kanssa maltillisuutta. Heinäkuussa 1792 hänen edustajanpaikkansa sai Ségrétier, ja pian Jaucourt asetettiin syytteeseen taantumuksen edustajana.

Vallankumouksen väkivaltaisuuksia paeten Jaucourt vietti useita vuosi maanpaossa. Hän oleskeli ensin Britanniassa ja sitten Sveitsissä, josta hän palasi Napoleon Bonaparten noustua valtaan. Jaucourt nousi ylähuoneeseen ja sai keisarikunnan kreivin arvon. Keisarikunnan kaaduttua hän toimi väliaikaishallinnossa ja sitten Ludvig XVIII:n ministerinä kohoten ylimpien neuvonantajien joukkoon.

Hän jatkoi ylähuoneen jäsenenä halki heinäkuun vallankumouksen ja Ludvig Filipin lyhyen hallintokauden, mutta Ranskan toisen tasavallan synnyttyä hän vetäytyi yksityishenkilöksi. Ennen uskonnonvapauslain säätämistä syntynyt Jaucourt oli kastettu varmuuden vuoksi katoliseen uskoon, mutta vanhuutensa vuosina hän pyrki edistämään protestanttien asemaa ja toimi vuodesta 1815 Pariisin protestanttisen raamattuseuran puheenjohtajana.[3] Pitkän elämänsä lopuksi Jaucourt ehti vielä nähdä Napoleon III:n valtaannousun. Hän kuoli 5. helmikuuta 1852 Presles’ssä, Seine-et-Marnen departementissa.
