Dan O’Bannon vuonna 2008.

Daniel Thomas ”Dan” O’Bannon (30. syyskuuta 1946 – 17. joulukuuta 2009) oli yhdysvaltalainen elokuvakäsikirjoittaja, ohjaaja ja satunnaisesti näyttelijä, yleensä science fiction- ja kauhutuotannoissa.

Elämänvaiheet ja ura

O’Bannon syntyi St. Louisissa Missourissa. Yliopistossa hän tapasi John Carpenterin ja yhdessä he tekivät 45-minuuttisen lyhytelokuvan Pimeä tähti (1970). Carpenter laajensi sen vain 60 000 dollarin budjetilla kokopitkäksi elokuvaksi, joka julkaistiin 1974. O’Bannon oli mukana valmistuksessa, ja hän toimi muun muassa käsikirjoittajana, leikkaajana ja erikoisefektien valmistajana sekä lisäksi näytteli yhden pääroolin (Pinback).[1] Vuonna 1975 Pimeä tähti voitti Golden Scroll -palkinnon parhaista erikoisefekteistä.

O’Bannon oli mukana tekemässä Tähtien sotaa[2] ja myös epäonnistuneessa Alejandro Jodorowskyn Dyyni-tuotannossa. Yhdessä Ronald Shusettin kanssa hän kirjoitti alkuperäisen Alien-käsikirjoituksen. O’Bannon oli tekemässä kulttimaineen saanutta animaatioelokuvaa Heavy Metal, josta hän kirjoitti kaksi osatarinaa [2]. Hän kirjoitti käsikirjoituksen Tobe Hooperin Tappavaan yhteyteen (Lifeforce (1985)) ja oli mukana Avaruuden pirujen (1953) uudelleenfilmatisoinnissa Vaara vieraalta planeetalta (1986).

Hän kirjoitti ja ohjasi kauhukomedian The Return of the Living Dead (1985).

Yhdessä Shusettin kanssa hän oli mukana käsikirjoittamassa suurmenestykseen noussutta Total Recall – unohda tai kuole (1990).

O’Bannon oli naimisissa Diane Louise Lindleyn kanssa vuodesta 1986[3] kuolemaansa asti. Hän sairasti Crohnin tautia[4] ja kuoli Los Angelesissa 17 joulukuuta 2009.[5] Heillä on yksi poika, Adam.[6]
