Vaso François

El Vaso François es una crátera, esto es, un tipo cerámico destinado a la mezcla del vino y del agua (tres partes de agua y una de vino). Fue realizado por el alfarero Ergótimos y decorada por el pintor Clitias alrededor del año 580 a. C. en Ática, está considerado la obra cumbre de la cerámica ática. Recibe el nombre en honor a su descubridor, Alessandro François (1796 - 1857), que lo halló en una tumba etrusca en la localidad de Chiusi. La pieza se conserva en el Museo Arqueológico de Florencia (Italia).

Es una pieza que reviste gran tamaño, de 66 centímetros de altura, con la boca y cuerpo anchos, a fin de que los comensales que acudían al simposium (beber vino junto con frutos secos o cualquier tipo de fruta) pudiesen introducir sus propios vasos para servirse ellos mismos. Concretamente es una crátera de volutas fechada en torno al año 570 a. C. que tiene seis frisos decorados con figuras.[1]​

Estamos ante el exponente de la plena maduración en la técnica y el estilo miniaturista en la decoración. Lleva cerca de 270 figuras que forman escenas de diferente índole. Las carreras de carros en honor de Patroclo, la caza del jabalí de Calidón, el desembarco de los atenienses en el Ática después de haber sido salvados por Teseo del Minotauro, la persecución de Aquiles a Troilo, la procesión de los dioses ante la casa de Peleo a causa de su boda con Tetis, Áyax recogiendo el cadáver de Aquiles, el regreso de Hefesto al Olimpo, una Gorgona volando, Artemisa como Potnia Theron, la guerra de los pigmeos contra las grullas, así como la representación de animales orientalizantes o escenas de centauromaquia son algunos de los temas que figuran en dicha crátera.
