The Squaw Man (1918)

The Squaw Man es el título de una obra de teatro, una novela y tres películas, la última de las cuales fue traducida en castellano como El prófugo. La historia es la misma, el protagonista, John Wynnegate, representa a un oficial de la Armada Inglesa que se declara culpable de una apropiación de dinero destinado a la caridad para proteger a su hermano y huye al oeste de Estados Unidos, donde conoce a una india squaw que le salva la vida.

La obra de teatro

The squaw man fue una obra en cuatro actos escrita por Edwin Milton Royle, estrenada el 23 de octubre de 1905 en el Teatro Wallack de Broadway y protagonizada por William Faversham como el capitán James Wynnegate, también conocido como Jim Carson. El papel de nativa lo interpretó su esposa Julie Opp y el de malvado, William S. Hart. Se representó en 222 ocasiones hasta el 1 de abril de 1906, y volvió a representarse más tarde en 1907, 1908, 1911 y 1921. En la versión de 1911 intervino Dustin Farnum en ocho ocasiones. En 1921, el propio William Faversham la representó en 50 ocasiones en el Teatro Astor.

La novela

  • En 1906, la actriz Julie Opp Faversham, que había interpretado la obra, publicó The squaw man: a novel, una adaptación literaria de la obra.

Las películas

En 1914, el realizador Cecil B. DeMille decidió realizar una película muda a partir de la obra de teatro. En 1918 hizo un remake de la misma y en 1931 realizó la primera versión sonora de la historia.

  • The Squaw Man (película de 1918) es un remake de la primera rodado con mejores medios. En este caso, el papel principal está interpretado por Elliott Dexter. Se la considera una película perdida, de la que solo se ha salvado el último rollo.

Squaw

La palabra squaw, procedente de la lengua algonquina, que da origen al título de la película, hace referencia a una mujer indígena americana. También hace referencia a ciertas plantas medicinales que usaban las mujeres indígenas. Con el tiempo, se convirtió en una palabra peyorativa, racista y sexista, por el odio hacia los nativos, y aun lo sigue siendo. Así, la película podría traducirse como El hombre de la squaw.
