Mets de Guaynabo

Los Mets de Guaynabo es un equipo de baloncesto profesional de la ciudad de Guaynabo, Puerto Rico, que compite en la liga Baloncesto Superior Nacional, la máxima categoría del baloncesto en el país.

Disputa sus encuentros en el Coliseo Mario Morales, con capacidad para 5.400 espectadores. El entrenador del equipo es Carlos Mario Rivera y los colores del equipo son el azul y el plata.

El equipo se disolvió en 2015, pero fue reintegrado con un nuevo propietario en 2019.

Historia

Los Mets se iniciaron en el baloncesto como la franquicia original de los Cangrejeros de Santurce, que antes del comienzo de la temporada de 1976 se trasladó a Guaynabo y se convirtió en los Guaynabo Mets. Sus primeros encuentros fueron celebrados en una cancha local en Isla Verde, lugar distante del pueblo de Guaynabo.

Fueron dirigidos por el legendario dirigente Nacional y Olímpico, Julio Toro, y fueron una fuerza dominante en el básquet boricua durante los años 80; con jugadores de la talla se Fico López, Mario «Quijote» Morales, José «El Galgo» Sosa, Earl Brown, Pipe Pérez (Pipetazo), Danny «Corre caminos» Rodríguez, José Santos y Gustavo Santos, Papiro León, Papote Agosto, entre otros. Con este cuadro de jugadores ganaron los campeonatos de 1980, 1982, y 1989, mientras llegaron a las finales en 1981, 1983 y 1985, y llegó hasta las series todos los años de dicha la década de los 80.

Lograron adquirir a José y Gustavo Santos de los Cardenales de Río Piedras, a quienes habían ganado el año anterior en las semifinales; por los que los Mets dieron cinco jugadores, el cambio más grande en la historia de la liga baloncesto superior hasta ese momento. Así se reinventaron con la adquisición de ambos jugadores y recurrieron a las ligas menores por futuras estrellas del baloncesto como Papiro León, Fico López y Papote Agosto. Este equipo tan joven logró dominar toda la década de los 80. Todos sus jugadores tenían menos de 25 años de edad, con algunos adolescentes en el banco.

La Federación de Baloncesto en aquel entonces aprobó un draft y una nueva regla según la cual un equipo sólo podía proteger a seis jugadores, lo que tuvo el efecto de debilitar la plantilla.

En 1983, se inauguró el Coliseo Mario «Quijote» Morales, el cual por entonces se llamó «Mets Pavillion» (Pabellón de los Mets); un complejo multiusos para disciplinas tales como: convenciones, boxeo, (incluso llegaron a boxear allí campeones de la talla de Victor Callejas, Osvaldo Ocasio, Jose De Jesus, Loris Stecca e Iván Calderón, todos campeones del mundo) patinaje, actividades de masa, y presentaciones artísticas y musicales.

Los Mets llegaron a las finales en 1990 y 1993, perdiendo en ambas ocasiones frente a los Leones de Ponce.

Problemas económicos obligaron el receso del equipo a principios de los años 2000.

En noviembre del año 2005, y a iniciativa del alcalde de Guaynabo, Héctor O'Neill García, se trasladó la franquicia de Isabela a Guaynabo, bajo el nombre de los Conquistadores de Guaynabo, siendo su apoderado Julio Cesar Vega Acosta. Durante las temporadas 2006-2008, Jorge L. Cátala asumió las riendas como apoderado.

En el año 2009 cuando se aclararon finalmente los asuntos relacionados al nombre de la franquicia de Guaynabo, se retomó el nombre Mets para todas las franquicias de deportes de Guaynabo.[1]​
