In partibus infidelium

In partibus infidelium es una expresión latina que significa «en tierras de infieles», utilizada hasta 1882 en la Iglesia católica para designar a obispos de sedes diocesanas titulares o no residenciales. Se trataba de un título honorífico, sin que estos obispos tuvieran directamente fieles a su cargo.

El uso de la expresión in partibus infidelium se explica por el hecho que en el pasado hubo muchas diócesis titulares que estaban en territorios bajo la dominación musulmana. Con la independencia durante las guerras balcánica de Serbia, Bulgaria y Grecia, dejó de ser conveniente calificar como situadas «en tierras de infieles» a las sedes titulares pertenecientes a estos países de religión cristiana ortodoxa. Así en su carta In suprema del 10 de junio de 1882, León XIII determinó que esas diócesis pasaran a denominarse «sedes titulares».[1]​
