Se conoce como "guerra de movimientos" a una fase de la Primera Guerra Mundial que tuvo lugar en 1914, llevada a cabo por Alemania, que quería derrotar a Francia para posteriormente centrarse en Rusia, a través de una estrategia de desplazamientos rápidos de material y de tropas.

En el frente occidental, los alemanes, pretendían una guerra rápida, clave para su "victoria", siguiendo las previsiones del plan Schlieffen, basado en el cálculo de que el ejército ruso necesitaría varias semanas para colocar en el frente toda su potencia. Los alemanes invadieron Bélgica el 4 de agosto de 1914 y se lanzan sobre Francia, donde el mariscal Joffre lleva a cabo un desesperado contraataque en el Río Marne que logró contener el avance alemán en el mes de septiembre de 1914. Con esta batalla los franceses consiguen que los alemanes se retiren de parte del territorio que habían conquistado.

A partir de ese momento ambos ejércitos se establecieron en sólidas líneas defensivas. De esta manera comenzó en el oeste la guerra de trincheras, que sustituyó a la inicial guerra de movimientos. Por otro lado, en el frente oriental los rusos invaden la Prusia Oriental, tras ese primer avance. Los alemanes, tras la victoria en Tannenberg se imponen y logran así detener el avance. Como consecuencia de estos hechos la estrategia de guerra de movimiento pensada por Alemania fracasa, y la guerra se alarga más de lo que los países podían esperar, dándose cuenta de que ganaría el bando que más fuera capaz de resistir.
