La diócesis de Penedo (en latín: Dioecesis Penedensis y en portugués: Diocese de Penedo) es una circunscripción eclesiástica de la Iglesia católica en Brasil. Se trata de una diócesis latina, sufragánea de la arquidiócesis de Maceió. Desde el 18 de agosto de 2021 su obispo es Valdemir Ferreira dos Santos.

Territorio y organización

Concatedral de la Santísima Virgen del Buen Consejo

La diócesis tiene 8905 km² y extiende su jurisdicción sobre los fieles católicos de rito latino residentes en 31 municipios del estado de Alagoas: Penedo, Anadia, Arapiraca, Barra de São Miguel, Belém, Boca da Mata, Campo Alegre, Campo Grande, Coité do Nóia, Coruripe, Craíbas, Feira Grande, Feliz Deserto, Girau do Ponciano, Igreja Nova, Jequiá da Praia, Junqueiro, Lagoa da Canoa, Limoeiro de Anadia, Maribondo, Olho d'Água Grande, Piaçabuçu, Porto Real do Colégio, Roteiro, São Brás, São Miguel dos Campos, São Sebastião, Tanque d'Arca, Taquarana, Teotônio Vilela y Traipu.[1]​

La sede de la diócesis se encuentra en la ciudad de Penedo, en donde se halla la Catedral de Nuestra Señora del Rosario. En Arapiraca se encuentra la Concatedral de la Santísima Virgen del Buen Consejo.

En 2019 en la diócesis existían 43 parroquias.

Historia

La diócesis fue erigida el 3 de abril de 1916 con la bula Catholicae Ecclesiae cura del papa Benedicto XV, obteniendo el territorio de la diócesis de Alagoas (hoy arquidiócesis de Maceió).[2]​

Originalmente sufragánea de la arquidiócesis de Olinda (hoy arquidiócesis de Olinda y Recife), el 13 de febrero de 1920 pasó a formar parte de la provincia eclesiástica de la arquidiócesis de Maceió.

El 10 de febrero de 1962 cedió una parte de su territorio para la erección de la diócesis de Palmeira dos Índios mediante la bula Quam supremam del papa Juan XXIII.[3]​.

El 9 de julio de 1984 la iglesia de la Santísima Virgen del Buen Consejo de Arapiraca fue elevada a concatedral por decreto Cum urbs de la Congregación para los Obispos.[4]​
