La diócesis de San Felipe (en latín: Dioecesis Sancti Philippi in Venetiola) es una sede de la Iglesia católica sufragánea de la arquidiócesis de Barquisimeto, ubicada en San Felipe, Yaracuy. Está en periodo de Sede vacante desde el 31 de octubre de 2023, por la designación de Mons. Víctor Hugo Basabe como Arzobispo de Coro.

Su patrona es Nuestra Señora de la Presentación, devoción que data desde 1694 cuando fue traída por los emigrantes canarios llegados al territorio del actual estado Yaracuy pero muchos años después es declarada patrona del estado, específicamente el 7 de octubre de 1966.

Historia

La evangelización comenzó con el sistema de encomiendas. Una de las obligaciones del comendador era la evangelización de los indios que estaban bajo su protección. Para ello debía mantenerse un sacerdote misionero y todo lo necesario para el culto. Dichas misiones dieron origen a muchas villas en la zona.

Para 1710 la orden de los capuchinos de Andalucía fundaron tres centros de misión en la parte inferior de Yaracuy que se extiende de San Felipe hacia el mar. La ciudad de San Felipe tiene su origen en un grupo de españoles de las islas Canarias, que se asentaron en un lugar conocido como Los Cerritos.

Yaracuy pertenecía a la diócesis de Barquisimeto (hoy arquidiócesis) con la excepción de Nirgua que pertenecía a la diócesis de Valencia (hoy arquidiócesis) hasta el 7 de octubre de 1966 cuando el papa Pablo VI estableció la diócesis de San Felipe mediante la bula Ex tempore quo.

Territorio

La diócesis comprende el estado venezolano de Yaracuy.

La sede episcopal se encuentra en la ciudad de San Felipe, donde se encuentra la catedral de Nuestra Señora de la Presentación , y donde se encuentra la hermosa talla de madera de la Virgen que fue develada en 1982 y que se encuentra es dicha catedral. También aquí esta la imagen de San Felipe el Apóstol, patrono de la ciudad de San Felipe. El día de su patrona es el 2 de febrero de cada año .

Su territorio se encuentra dividido en 32 parroquias.
