La cronología de la guerra Israel-Gaza inicia el 7 de octubre de 2023, cuando diversos grupos paramilitares palestinos encabezados por Hamás lanzaron un ataque a gran escala contra las comunidades fronterizas al que denominaron Operación Inundación de Al-Aqsa, y que supuso el inicio de la guerra entre Israel y Gaza.[1]​ El ataque, según el gobierno israelí, supuso la muerte de unas 1200 personas, un tercio de los cuales eran militares en activo, y el secuestro de unas 240 personas, tanto militares como civiles, que fueron llevados al interior de la Franja de Gaza.[2]​ Israel declaró el estado de guerra y comenzó una campaña de bombardeos sobre la Franja de Gaza que causó una enorme cantidad de muertes, de las cuales aproximadamente un 70% son mujeres y niños .[3]​[4]​

La guerra ha tenido un gran coste en vidas humanas en la Franja de Gaza, donde más de 41 870 personas han muerto, la gran mayoría civiles, entre ellos 16 750 niños y más de 10 000 mujeres, a los que se suman más de 97 166 heridos (incluidos 8663 niños y 19 000 mujeres) y otras 10 000 personas se encuentran desaparecidas y presuntamente muertas bajo los escombros de los edificios destruidos.[5]​[6]​Israel ha destruido o dañado el 70 % de las viviendas de la Franja, así como gran parte del patrimonio cultural gazatí, además de profanar decenas de cementerios.[7]​[8]​[9]​[10]​ Los expertos dicen que la escala y el ritmo de la destrucción en Gaza se encuentran entre los más graves de la historia mundial reciente.[11]​[12]​ Además, se ha desarrollado una grave crisis humanitaria, con la atención sanitaria colapsada,[13]​ escasez de alimentos, agua potable, medicinas y combustible debido al bloqueo,[14]​[15]​[16]​ apagones de electricidad y comunicaciones.[17]​ Casi todos los 2,3 millones de habitantes de Gaza se han visto obligados a abandonar sus hogares y se han convertido en desplazados internos, mientras que miles de palestinos han sido detenidos por Israel.[18]​[19]​[20]​ La ONU ha advertido de una posible hambruna[21]​ y ha denunciado ampliamente que «no hay ningún lugar seguro en Gaza» donde ir, ya que Israel ha atacado reiteradamente áreas que previamente había descrito como zonas seguras y donde había ordenado a los palestinos que se refugiaran.[22]​[23]​[24]​ Las muertes generalizadas de civiles han dado lugar a acusaciones de crímenes de guerra contra Israel.[25]​[26]​ Por su parte, Israel ha declarado que ha perdido 350 militares desde el 4 de febrero de 2024.[27]​
