La arquidiócesis de Tarento (en latín: Archidioecesis Tarentina) es una sede metropolitana de la Iglesia católica en Italia, perteneciente a la región eclesiástica de Apulia. En 2014 contaba unos 412.500 bautizados sobre una población de 415.500 habitantes. El arzobispo es Ciro Miniero desde el 22 de julio de 2023.

En una leyenda local de Tarento, según un documento del siglo XI o XII, el Evangelio fue predicado en Tarento por San Pedro Apóstol. Había llegado a la ciudad en el año 45 d. C., junto con San Marcos, de camino a Roma. Amasianus era un jardinero o verdulero, a quien Pedro convirtió al cristianismo. Sólo más tarde, mucho más tarde, los tarentinos afirman que Amasianus fue consagrado obispo. También se afirma que San Cataldus fue consagrado por San Pedro.

La ciudad también rinde homenaje al mártir San Orontius. Irontius, hijo de un tesorero imperial, había sido convertido al cristianismo por Justus, un discípulo de San Pablo, que había desembarcado en el puerto de San Cataldus y predicó a la población de la localidad de Lecce en la época de Nerón, a pesar del acoso de los funcionarios imperiales. Regresaron a Corinto, donde San Pablo consagró a Orontius como primer obispo de Lecce, y el grupo regresó a Lecce para continuar su evangelización.

El primer obispo cuya fecha se conoce es Petrus (496). En el pontificado de San Gregorio Magno (590–604), se conocen los nombres de tres obispos que ocuparon la cátedra episcopal: Andreas (590), Joannes (601) y Honorio (603). El arzobispo Joannes (978) es el primero que tuvo el título de arzobispo.

Territorio

La arquidiócesis comprende 18 municipios de la provincia de Tarento: Carosino, Crispiano, Faggiano, Fragagnano, Grottaglie, Leporano, Lizzano, Martina Franca, Monteiasi, Montemesola, Monteparano, Pulsano, Roccaforzata, San Giorgio Ionico, San Marzano di San Giuseppe, Statte, Tarento y Torricella.
