Kompasdirektoj

Okcidento estas unu el la kvar kompasdirektoj. Ĝi estas la direkto kontraŭa al la turniĝo de la tero, do la direkto en kiu okazas la sunsubiro. Ĝi estas la direkto kontraŭa al oriento.

La esprimo "okcidento" foje estas uzata en kultura aŭ politika kunteksto rilate al la "Okcidenta civilizo".

Apud la Fundamenta vorto "okcidento" kelkaj esperantistoj uzas ankaŭ la esprimon "uesto" (kaj simile uzas "eosto" anstataŭ "oriento"). Tiuj du novradikaj vortoj ebligas mallongigi la kvar kompasdirektojn per kvar malsamaj literoj (E-S-U-N). Laŭ kelkaj[kiuj?] tiuj du vortoj ankaŭ havas la avantaĝon, ke ili ne portas la aldonan kulturan signifon, kiun la vortoj "okcidento" kaj "oriento" havas (en la angla krom la ĉefaj "West" kaj "East" oni fojfoje uzas "Occident" kaj "Orient", do kelkaj erare pensas, ke "okcidento" kaj "oriento" estas tradukoj pli ĝuste de tiuj vortoj, ol de la ordinaraj).

Tamen tiuj du vortoj estas konsiderataj superfluaj de multaj esperantistoj[kiuj?]. La fakto, ke oni en multaj lingvoj mallongigas la kompasdirektojn per unu litero, ja devenas de tio, ke tiuj lingvoj havas malsamajn komencliterojn por tiuj direktoj. Ne ekzistas efektiva kontraŭargumento al la uzado de dulitera mallongigo en Esperanto: Or-Su-Ok-No. La vortoj "nordo" kaj "sudo" nun ankaŭ havas politikan kromsignifon, sed tio ne estu kialo por enkonduki novajn vortojn sen tiu kromsignifo.
