Zed (text editor)
Zed is a free and open-source text and source-code editor for Linux and macOS developed by Zed Industries. A Windows version is in development.[2] Supported features include GPU rendering, Language Server Protocol (LSP), Tree-sitter, a debugger with support for Debug Adapter Protocol (DAP),[3][4] AI assistance,[5] Model Context Protocol (MCP), Git, multi-buffer editing,[6] remote development[7] and real-time collaborative editing with other Zed users or AI agents.[8][9] Hundreds of extensions are available for additional LSP, DAP & MCP servers, themes and other features.[10] PricingThe concept of free and open source describes the Zed source code. The functional program is free, but several features are limited in the free model (see - freemium pricing model). As of 2025, the free version has monthly limits on the number of predictive edits and generative AI queries. [11] HistoryAfter Atom was discontinued in 2022, three key contributors created Zed, announcing it in 2023. In 2024 the project was open-sourced.[12][13] In 2025, the project announced they had received $32 million in funding from Sequoia Capital.[14] See also
