Turkish chess grandmaster (born 2011)
Yağız Kaan Erdoğmuş (born 3 June 2011)[1] is a Turkish chess prodigy and grandmaster. He was awarded the International Master title prior to turning 12, becoming the youngest individual from Turkey to achieve this title.[2] In 2024, he became the fourth-youngest grandmaster in history. He also became the youngest player ever to achieve a 2600 FIDE rating in classical chess at just the age of 13 years and 4 months. Erdoğmuş is currently the youngest grandmaster in the world.[3]
Early life
Erdoğmuş was born in Bursa, Turkey.[4] Introduced to chess by his kindergarten teacher, he started playing the game at the age of 6.[5]
Chess career
In 2018, Erdoğmuş won the age 8 category at the 6th Cesme International Open Chess Tournament 2018, and in the 2019 Turkey Youth Chess Championship for the same age group.[1] He won the U-8 European Chess Championship in 2019, winning 8 out of 8 games, guaranteeing the championship as he entered the last round.[6][7]
He attained the IM title during the 3rd FIDE Council in 2022, following a commendable performance at the Svetozar Gligoric Memorial Chess Tournament in Serbia.[8][9] Also in 2022, Erdoğmuş won the ChessKid Youth Speed Chess Championship online tournament.[10]
Erdoğmuş participated in advanced training and competitions in 2023, including the Chessable FIDE Camp in Spain and the 2023 European Individual Chess Championship in Serbia.[10][11]
In December 2023, at the Sunway Sitges tournament Erdoğmuş ranked 9th with 7.5/10.[12]
In April 2024, at the Grenke Chess Open and Classic, he became the fourth-youngest Grandmaster in the world.[13]
In May 2024, Erdoğmuş broke GM Judit Polgar's 35 year old record as the highest-rated player before the age of 13 by reaching a rating of 2569 [14] (while GM Judit Polgar remained the highest-ranked 12-year-old at 56th [15])
In July 2024, he won both under 13 and under 16 ChessKid Youth Championship tournaments.[16]
