Wikipedia:Source counting

Source counting is the dubious practice of listing or simply enumerating sources that contain a certain term or phrase to bolster one's argument. The practice is often the last refuge of editors who are themselves not effective researchers and instead would like to replace poorly executed bibliometry in place of actual research. A typical practice of the source counter is to use a search engine to find sources and then proceed to list sources without regard to context or relative reliability of the sources being considered.
Unfortunately, such source counters are difficult to engage in discussion as they tend to insist that the only possible counter to their continued insistence that their enumeration of sources is the best way to conduct research is to have those who disagree count their own sources. This kind of game-playing tends to disrupt talkpages and generally prevents productive collaboration of editors.
The best thing to do when encountering source counters is to point them to this essay and tell them to stop. If they refuse, report them to the proper authorities. One can also archive off-topic posts, but be careful not to abrogate talkpage rules.
