Hello there. I was just curious on why you removed Category:FIBA Basketball World Cup-winning players at Dennis Schröder. He's definitely one of those players. Hi Rikster2, I have noticed an error in the 1964 Saint Louis University yearbook which has resulted in the incorrect identification of two subjects in pictures you have uploaded: John Benington and Bob Guelker. The misidentification stems from the original yearbook in its Athletic Department section where their names have been switched. The Saint Louis University Libraries Digital Collections has pictures correctly labelled of Benington and Guelker on their website. Both articles have received notices from alleged descendants notifying the pictures as being incorrect (Benington, Guelker). I wanted to let you know before I submit the two pictures for renaming. Hey. Just checking if you know of any good sources for Conference USA awards from around 1999–2000 and 2000–01. I'm drafting Justin Tatum [1] and his website claims he was "Conference USA First Team All Defense player". It doesn't say which year. Most sources I can find cite what his website says, so I was hoping there is an original source from that time period that can verify this claim. Thanks in advance. The record book only has all-defensive records from 2007 onwards, so his claim could be embellished. Noticed he's on your user page as an article to monitor. I discovered today that he's also a women's DI head coach and won the Maggie Dixon Award in 2019, so he'd be a two-template CPOY. I realistically wouldn't get around to creating him for a very long time, but if you're feeling inspired, he could be a two birds / one stone idea for you. I've been cleaning up Chuck Taylor Most Valuable Player Award but came across a conundrum. All of the players listed on this article between 1992–2020 are the NAIA Division I Tournament MVPs, but there was also a Division II in that span. Do you know if there is a second / concurrent Chuck Taylor Tourney MVP Award for the DII guys, and if so, should we incorporate them into this article somehow?

The NAIA is an underserved area of WP:CBBALL, and while I'm not ready to start fleshing out player bios or expanding tournament articles, I think getting the right MVPs in order is a decent start. (On a related note, you probably noticed I've been on a newspapers.com tear for the CPOY lists. I found the motivation to start really cleaning these up and making them presentable at a level worthy of the efforts we've put in for well over a decade on this wikiproject. I find that robust refs lists using newspapers.com "adds something" to the professionalism of the pages. I will probably add refs to this NAIA Tourney MVP list soon too). Let me dig around a little and see what I can find. Are you still getting newspapers.com through Wikipedia? I tried it a little while back and it seems I lost access and I can’t request it again Rikster2 (talk) 15:38, 5 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]__DTELLIPSISBUTTON__{"threadItem":{"timestamp":"20240105153800","author":"Rikster2","type":"comment","level":2,"id":"c-Rikster2-20240105153800-SportsGuy789-20240105152500","replies":["c-Rikster2-20240105154200-Rikster2-20240105153800"]}}-->

There's some issue with the newspapers.com URL structure (they changed it, or something), so the Wikipedia editors' workaround is to use a proxy link. More info found here. Use this link to get into it: https://www-newspapers-com.wikipedialibrary.idm.oclc.org. Keep me posted with the DI / DII findings. If you follow that link I posted and use the drop downs to search D2 men’s basketball and then “tournament mvp” it gives you the players from 2009-2017 (except 2016). Not sure why just those ones but I have a couple offline sources I can check. I think I even have a recent NAIA D2 final four program somewhere. Good initial source. But super weird they list just those years. I'll blame it on shoddy NAIA information director recordkeeping and continue to plug away. I don’t have any sources to help. What I thought was an NAIA D2 program was actually an NJCAA D2 program. I think the only way is to go year by year and research them. 1992 was David James of Grace - looked that one up on newspapers.com. I was able to use the yearly Wikipedia articles' infoboxes (ex.) to see who was listed. I probably should have started there, lol. I'll still vet each of those players with newspapers.com sources but the list should be complete now. I revamped Chuck Taylor Most Valuable Player Award last night. Do you know if this is a thing? I'm wondering out loud if trying to research and write an equivalent CPOY article but for historical Independents makes any sense. I wouldn't know who votes for this or how it's "officially" determined. Longwood's Antwan Carter is my starting point (link): "He averaged 19.4 points and 9.2 rebounds, earning CollegeInsider.com, College Sports Madness, CollegeHoops.net and Roundball Daily.com's Independent Player of the Year."

I guess I'm just trying to get a pulse from you on if this is worth the effort or not, and why. Sorry for the delay in responding. I am not sure that this is a thing - there is no “body” that would name them and we generally don’t give credence to awards granted by media outlets unless they are recognized by the NCAA or a conference (like AP SEC POY). After the Big East and some other leagues formed in the late 70s-early 80s, the “big 3” independents were DePaul, Marquette and Notre Dame. I went and looked at their media guides and none list anyone as an Independent POY. The chances of no one from those three schools being named independent POY from 1980 to when they joined conferences 15-20 years later is pretty slim in my opinion, so I think it’s not really a thing. And today I think there is just one independent program - Chicago State. Just my two cents. No worries. I had emailed an NCAA liaison about it actually (Jeff Williams). I heard back today. This was his email to me:
"Unfortunately, we don’t track on conference players of the year. We typically leave that to the conferences themselves. You're right there isn’t an "independent" conference to manage these types of things. There have been some affiliations of independent teams at times in Divisions II and III where there tend to be a few more independent teams but I'm not aware of any sort of affiliation like that in Division I nor am I familiar with any formal "independent" players of the year. I guess it's possible a publication like Sporting News or something like that may have done something like that but, again, I'm not aware.
I’m sorry I don’t have more detail for you on this. Just not something I'm aware of.
Thanks. - Jeff"

The AP names all-conference teams for most major conferences and they aren't official for the most part. It is dumb and confusing. Agreed to all. And especially since the SEC is the one conference that actually factors in the AP's vote to determine their POYs, while none of the other conferences do. Another layer of confusion. Is the Sports Reference website considered reliable enough to source birth dates for players/coaches? I have found many birth dates there for coaches I've created articles for before and been unable to find their birth date anywhere else. I'd appreciate your input; don't want to jump the gun unnecessarily.

I'm confused. Your explanation for deleting his Michigan alumnus category was "he will get the Michigan basketball player category when he plays for them." If he is an alumnus, which he appears to be as he transferred to the school, where is it written that he should not be reflected in the alumnus category? I would think that whether he is an athlete, or painter, or criminal is irrelevant -- that if one has a wp page and is an alumnus, one qualifies for being reflected in that category. --2603:7000:2101:AA00:958D:F9AB:3F23:25EC (talk) 20:43, 30 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]__DTELLIPSISBUTTON__{"threadItem":{"timestamp":"20240530204300","author":"2603:7000:2101:AA00:958D:F9AB:3F23:25EC","type":"comment","level":3,"id":"c-2603:7000:2101:AA00:958D:F9AB:3F23:25EC-20240530204300-Rikster2-20240530190700","replies":["c-Rikster2-20240531114700-2603:7000:2101:AA00:958D:F9AB:3F23:25EC-20240530204300"]}}-->
Why are you in a rush to add a category? For athletes we add the player sub category once they have played and only add the alumni category when/if it becomes clear the player attended but won’t play for the school. Is he even taking classes at Michigan now? Is he an alumni (past attendee) as soon as he steps on campus? I don’t think I have ever heard a current attendee of a school refer to themselves as “alumni.” Typically it would be student or attendee. Alumni denotes pat attendence. I'm perplexed by "why are you in a rush?" If it is appropriate for a person to be put in a category, it is appropriate. Your comment makes no sense to me, frankly. It's like saying, "why are you in a rush to update an article to something that is true."
And as to what an alumnus is, it refers to a person who has attended or has graduated from a particular school, college, or university. You seem to mistakenly believe that an alumnus means that they are not at the school. But there is no more basis for that than there would be for me deleting an athlete who is currently on a team, from the cat for players for that team. I'm having trouble understanding the basis for your comments - other than personal leaning. As to alumnus, it's easy enough to see what Merriam Webster defines it as. And unlike you, I have heard of current attendees being referred to as alumni. I understand that some people also mistakenly believe a person has to have graduated to be an alumnus. That is also without support. 2603:7000:2101:AA00:6C0A:94C4:9E07:7521 (talk) 22:27, 3 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]__DTELLIPSISBUTTON__{"threadItem":{"timestamp":"20240603222700","author":"2603:7000:2101:AA00:6C0A:94C4:9E07:7521","type":"comment","level":5,"id":"c-2603:7000:2101:AA00:6C0A:94C4:9E07:7521-20240603222700-Rikster2-20240531114700","replies":["c-Rikster2-20240603225600-2603:7000:2101:AA00:6C0A:94C4:9E07:7521-20240603222700","c-Rikster2-20240603230600-2603:7000:2101:AA00:6C0A:94C4:9E07:7521-20240603222700"]}}-->
there is nothing in the Merriam-Webster definition that connotes a current student. I read it as a past-tense word and would need to see something that specifically says a current student qualifies (since the term is literally never used for current attendees in “real life.”) That said, I assume that you have a source that Wolf currently attends Michigan? It is the summer after all. A source he is a student there today? Nice attempt at being a passive-aggressive tool, though. You succeeded on that front. By the way, the Oxford dictionary specifically calls out the word “former” in the definition and the Merriam-Webster essay on the word speaks of it as a past-tense term as well. OK. When I read “guard / forward” for a modern player that means PG/SG/SF/PF. Usually “guard” or forward” is used to denote both positions because only 2 positions are allowed in the infobox. Regarding Special:diff/1244377214 this revert, this topic has been discussed at both Wikipedia talk:Manual of Style/Infoboxes#For sportspeople and Template talk:Infobox basketball biography#Nationality. I see you and I and a third editor supporting removal of this field, an abstention, and some other comments about how to reduce problems if it's kept. I read that as sufficient support for removal to proceed. Was there some more consensus-building you wanted to happen before I can start removing this field on sight? -- Beland (talk) 01:52, 7 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]__DTELLIPSISBUTTON__{"threadItem":{"timestamp":"20240907015200","author":"Beland","type":"comment","level":1,"id":"c-Beland-20240907015200-Nationality_of_sportspeople","replies":["c-Rikster2-20240907120100-Beland-20240907015200"]}}-->

My saying generally that the basketball project should get rid of the nationality field in what is essentially a consensus discussion does not equate to stating it should be removed in a specific case in absence of an actual consensus to remove it across the board. Your edit summary on the Julius Hodge article was dishonest or at best a huge misconception on your part. The field still remains in the basketball infobox (again, because no consensus has been reached) and as such it will be used as intended unless consensus is met to remove it from the infobox altogether Rikster2 (talk) 12:01, 7 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]__DTELLIPSISBUTTON__{"threadItem":{"timestamp":"20240907120100","author":"Rikster2","type":"comment","level":2,"id":"c-Rikster2-20240907120100-Beland-20240907015200","replies":[]}}-->

that’s not good enough, you need a WP:Reliable sources that proves the place of birth - it’s not in his college bio as it often is with basketball players.
