Hi PKT, I was just sticking in some references. Even had an edit conflict with your message while inserting these. I usually get a little window of opportunity by some status that someone once assigned to me. I'm writing and editing here forever, never bother much with rights. I know there are vast amounts of folks who just dump stories that cannot and will not be seriously referenced. Just thought that my experience could also be helpful for your continued success! gidonb (talk) 18:41, 14 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]__DTELLIPSISBUTTON__{"threadItem":{"timestamp":"2017-01-14T18:41:00.000Z","author":"Gidonb","type":"comment","level":1,"id":"c-Gidonb-2017-01-14T18:41:00.000Z-Robin_Schmidt","replies":[]}}-->

Hi PKT. Thank you for adding coordinates to the Tsawwassen Mills article. It would be great if you could add coordinates to the infobox of the Telus Garden article. I tried using the tool from WMF Labs, but was a couple of blocks off the correct location. Thank you! Done, but there's a problem with the article infobox. It says the building's at Robson and Seymour, but the map and the building's website both indicate that it's at West Georgia and Richards. I used coordinates from the latter - the article should be updated to match. Guild of Copy Editors February 2017 News

Hello everyone, and welcome to the February 2017 GOCE newsletter. The Guild has been busy since the last time your coordinators sent out a newsletter!

December blitz: This one-week copy-editing blitz ran from 11 through 17 December; the themes were Requests and eliminating the November 2015 backlog. Of the 14 editors who signed up, nine editors completed 29 articles. Barnstars and rollover totals are located here. Thanks to all who took part.

January drive: The January drive was a great success. We set out to remove December 2015 and January and February 2016 from our backlog (195 articles), and by 22 January we had cleared those and had to add a third month (March 2016). At the end of the month we had almost cleared out that last month as well, for a total of 180 old articles removed from the backlog! We reduced our overall backlog by 337 articles, to a low of 1,465 articles, our second-lowest month-end total ever. We also handled all of the remaining requests from December 2016. Officially, 19 editors recorded 337 copy edits (over 679,000 words).

February blitz: The one-week February blitz, focusing on the remaining March 2016 backlog and January 2017 requests, ran from 12 to 18 February. Seven editors reduced the total in those two backlog segments from 32 to 10 articles, leaving us in good shape going in to the March drive.

Coordinator elections for the first half of 2017: In December, coordinators for the first half of 2017 were elected. Jonesey95 stepped aside as lead coordinator, remaining as coordinator and allowing Miniapolis to be the lead, and Tdslk and Corinne returned as coordinators. Thanks to all who participated!

Speaking of coordinators, congratulations to Jonesey95 on their well-deserved induction into the Guild of Copy Editors Hall of Fame. The plaque reads: "For dedicated service as lead coordinator (2014, 1 July – 31 December 2015 and all of 2016) and coordinator (1 January – 30 June 2015 and 1 January – 30 June 2017); exceptional template-creation work (considerably streamlining project administration), and their emphasis on keeping the GOCE a drama-free zone."

Housekeeping note: We do not send a newsletter before every drive or blitz. To have a better chance of knowing when the next event will start, add the GOCE's message box to your watchlist.

Thank you all again for your participation; we wouldn't be able to achieve what we have without you! Cheers from your GOCE coordinators: Miniapolis, Jonesey95, Corinne and Tdslk.

To discontinue receiving GOCE newsletters, please remove your name from our mailing list.

Good afternoon, PKT. You had given me some useful tips at the Community project Talk page WP:Canadian communities. Would you agree to take a look at the lead for another one? West Montrose, Ontario.

I have been working to improve many articles about small towns and cities in Southern Ontario, Canada including West Montrose, Ontario. When I first got involved (March 29) there was not a single citation. I added new content and added citations. Suddenly, we have a long, ongoing argument at the Talk page about the very short lead. Because the Talk content is so extensive, and hence confusing, it's tough to get anyone from the Feedback Service involved to try to cut through all that and help us get a Consensus.

The only real issues (as I see them) are:

1. Does this community have Old Order Mennonites who drive horse and buggies. (That content has been in the article since 2007 and I did not change it. I just added citations.) Very recently however, this became a huge item of contention.

2. Is West Montrose, Ontario just a small core with a bridge and a few houses or is it a more extensive area. (The citations confirm that this rural farming region with a few small villages has many Old Order Mennonites but because West Montrose is tiny, they do not specifically discuss this community.)

3. There were also debates as to what is, or is not, a reliable source, although I believe we have a consensus (though definitely not unanimous!) as to which are reliable sources.

The actual content of the lead is very short but the Talk section goes on and on and on with debates. (Admittedly, some of those are my posts.) Cheers! Thanks for this edit. I saw it come by on my watchlist. However, it also triggered my curiosity - why did you change "[[Colombia|Colombian]]" to "[[Colombia]]n"? Caution Hi PKT. Please stop patrolling articles now – your patrolling does not appear to be in accordance with the instructions at New Page Patrol. Specifically, in your patrol of Visorhead you tagged it with WP:BLPPROD which was not at all suitable. It is not a biography.. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask me on my talk page. That's a matter of opinion - according to what was posted, Visorhead was an alias for two people who did some travelling to several countries on motorcycles. I would have tagged it for speedy deletion, but wasn't sure that db-person was appropriate (they apparently did something semi-notable); however the article certainly has no references so I used BLP prod instead, anticipating that other editors would notice and change it to a speedy deletion if they thought it deserved it. I will continue to patrol newpages from time to time, as I have done in the past. The perception that Downsview extends to Steeles is common. I've heard it quite a lot. Lots of businesses in particular do. For example:

Hello PKT, I missed seeing your message yesterday about Philip of Burgundy and Charles VII on this page https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Catherine_(1986_TV_series) I have now added his correct name Philip the Good. With so many Dukes, it really needs the correct name I agree with you. Hi PKT. Are you sure these pages are dabs and not set-index articles? Per WP:SETNOTDAB, I find it likelier that they are the latter.--Nevéselbert 19:16, 14 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]__DTELLIPSISBUTTON__{"threadItem":{"timestamp":"2017-09-14T19:16:00.000Z","author":"Neve-selbert","type":"comment","level":1,"id":"c-Neve-selbert-2017-09-14T19:16:00.000Z-Conservative_government_and_Liberal_government","replies":["c-PKT-2017-09-14T20:09:00.000Z-Neve-selbert-2017-09-14T19:16:00.000Z"],"displayName":"Nev\u00e9"}}-->

I had not heard of "set index articles" in 11 years of editing here on WP. Having read through WP:SETNOTDAB, I think the delineation between "set" vs "dab" to be quite a fine line. In any case, you're referring to the WikiProject classifications I applied to the two articles, and whether they're marked as "class=dab" or "class=list" is a minor nit. If you'd like to change them to "class=list", please feel free, as long as they're the same class for all WikiProjects. Your change to the link to "CF" is reasonable; however, nearby, "LF" links to Left fielder and "RF" links to Right fielder, an inexplicable difference. Hello, PKT.

As one of Wikipedia's most experienced Wikipedia editors,
Would you please consider becoming a New Page Reviewer? Reviewing/patrolling a page doesn't take much time but it requires a good understanding of Wikipedia policies and guidelines; currently Wikipedia needs experienced users at this task. (After gaining the flag, patrolling is not mandatory. One can do it at their convenience). But kindly read the tutorial before making your decision. Hello, PKT. Voting in the 2017 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23.59 on Sunday, 10 December. All users who registered an account before Saturday, 28 October 2017, made at least 150 mainspace edits before Wednesday, 1 November 2017 and are not currently blocked are eligible to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2017 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. Hello PKT. Your account has been added to the "New page reviewers" user group, allowing you to review new pages and mark them as patrolled, tag them for maintenance issues, or in some cases, tag them for deletion. The list of articles awaiting review is located at the New Pages Feed. New page reviewing is a vital function for policing the quality of the encylopedia, if you have not already done so, you must read the new tutorial at New Pages Review, the linked guides and essays, and fully understand the various deletion criteria. If you need more help or wish to discuss the process, please join or start a thread at page reviewer talk.

  • URGENT: Please consider helping get the huge backlog down to a manageable number of pages as soon as possible.
  • Be nice to new users - they are often not aware of doing anything wrong.
  • You will frequently be asked by users to explain why their page is being deleted - be formal and polite in your approach to them too, even if they are not.
  • Don't review a page if you are not sure what to do. Just leave it for another reviewer.
  • Remember that quality is quintessential to good patrolling. Take your time to patrol each article, there is no rush. Use the message feature and offer basic advice.

The reviewer right does not change your status or how you can edit articles. If you no longer want this user right, you may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time. In case of abuse or persistent inaccuracy of reviewing, the right can be revoked at any time by an administrator. Hi there,

I work on the Wikipedia Visiting Scholars program in my role with Wiki Education. I've been talking to someone at the University of Windsor about sponsoring a Visiting Scholar and hope to get your thoughts about the subject. The basic idea of the program is that a university gives remote library access (ebooks, databases, etc.) to an experienced Wikipedian capable of using those resources to improve articles in an area of mutual interest. In other words, it's a pretty easy-going relationship intended to empower a Wikipedian in their editing while increasing the impact of a library's holdings. UWindsor would like to support someone interested to write about the history of southwestern Ontario. In my experience, it can be challenging to find the right person given a geographically limited topic scope, but I wanted to get your take. The first question would be whether this sort of program would be interesting to you personally. Second question is what your sense is of how many editors actively contribute to such articles? The opportunity hasn't been formally announced yet -- I'm just doing some advance research at this point. :) Thanks for your time. --Ryan (Wiki Ed) (talk) 22:49, 6 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]__DTELLIPSISBUTTON__{"threadItem":{"timestamp":"2017-12-06T22:49:00.000Z","author":"Ryan (Wiki Ed)","type":"comment","level":1,"id":"c-Ryan_(Wiki_Ed)-2017-12-06T22:49:00.000Z-Wikipedia_Visiting_Scholars_at_Windsor","replies":[]}}-->

Hi and thank you for putting a warning at the top of Khai khrop alerting readers that the citation style used therein might be unclear to them. But the article contains a sum total of five citations, so my understanding of you action was that in choosing not to undertake the trivial task of fixing them and instead opting to put a big sign at the top of the article you were simply being too polite and wary of imposing your own citation style. I removed the tag with an indication that any style you choose will be accepted. But you seem to have foregone the opportunity to make the changes you deem necessary and have simply put the tag back on. Now I am perplexed and I am wondering whether I might not have misconstrued your intention. – Uanfala (talk) 01:26, 7 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]__DTELLIPSISBUTTON__{"threadItem":{"timestamp":"2017-12-07T01:26:00.000Z","author":"Uanfala","type":"comment","level":1,"id":"c-Uanfala-2017-12-07T01:26:00.000Z-Very_important_tags","replies":["c-PKT-2017-12-07T16:44:00.000Z-Uanfala-2017-12-07T01:26:00.000Z"]}}-->

Hello PKT, thank you for your efforts reviewing new pages!

Backlog update:

  • The new page backlog is currently at 12713 pages. Please consider reviewing even just a few pages each day! If everyone helps out, it will really put a dent in the backlog.
  • Currently the backlog stretches back to March and some pages in the backlog have passed the 90 day Google index point. Please consider reviewing some of them!

Outreach and Invitations:

  • If you know other editors with a good understanding of Wikipedia policy, invite them to join NPP by dropping the invitation template on their talk page with: {{subst:NPR invite}}. Adding more qualified reviewers will help with keeping the backlog manageable.

New Year New Page Review Drive

  • A backlog drive is planned for the start of the year, beginning on January 1st and running until the end of the month. Unique prizes will be given in tiers for both the total number of reviews made, as well as the longest 'streak' maintained.
  • Note: quality reviewing is extremely important, please do not sacrifice quality for quantity.

General project update:

  • ACTRIAL has resulted in a significant increase in the quality of new submissions, with noticeably fewer CSD, PROD, and BLPPROD candidates in the new page feed. However, the majority of the backlog still dates back to before ACTRIAL started, so consider reviewing articles from the middle or back of the backlog.
  • The NPP Browser can help you quickly find articles with topics that you prefer to review from within the backlog.
  • To keep up with the latest conversation on New Pages Patrol or to ask questions, you can go to Wikipedia talk:New pages patrol/Reviewers and add it to your watchlist.

If you wish to opt-out of future mailings, go here. Guild of Copy Editors December 2017 News

Hello copy editors! Welcome to the December 2017 GOCE newsletter, which contains nine months(!) of updates. The Guild has been busy and successful; your diligent efforts in 2017 has brought the backlog of articles requiring copy edit to below 1,000 articles for the first time. Thanks to all editors who have contributed their time and energy to help make this happen.

Our copy-editing drives (month-long backlog-reduction drives held in odd-numbered months) and blitzes (week-long themed editing in even-numbered months) have been very successful this year.

March drive: We set out to remove April, May, and June 2016 from our backlog and all February 2017 Requests (a total of 304 articles). By the end of the month, all but 22 of these articles were cleared. Officially, of the 28 who signed up, 22 editors recorded 257 copy edits (439,952 words). (These numbers do not always make sense when you compare them to the overall reduction in the backlog, because not all editors record every copy edit on the drive page.)

April blitz: This one-week copy-editing blitz ran from 16 through 22 April; the theme was Requests. Of the 15 who signed up, 9 editors completed 43 articles (81,822 words).

May drive: The goals were to remove July, August, and September 2016 from the backlog and to complete all March 2017 Requests (a total of 300 articles). By the end of the month, we had reduced our overall backlog to an all-time low of 1,388 articles. Of the 28 who signed up, 17 editors completed 187 articles (321,810 words).

June blitz: This one-week copy-editing blitz ran from 18 through 24 June; the theme was Requests. Of the 16 who signed up, 9 editors completed 28 copy edits (117,089 words).

2017 Coordinator elections: In June, coordinators for the second half of 2017 were elected. Jonesey95 moved back into the lead coordinator position, with Miniapolis stepping down to remain as coordinator; Tdslk and Corinne returned as coordinators, and Keira1996 rejoined after an extended absence. Thanks to all who participated!

July drive: We set out to remove August, September, October, and November 2016 from the backlog and to complete all May and June 2017 Requests (a total of 242 articles). The drive was an enormous success, and the target was nearly achieved within three weeks, so that December 2016 was added to the "old articles" list used as a goal for the drive. By the end of the month, only three articles from 2016 remained, and for the second drive in a row, the backlog was reduced to a new all-time low, this time to 1,363 articles. Of the 33 who signed up, 21 editors completed 337 articles (556,482 words).

August blitz: This one-week copy-editing blitz ran from 20 through 26 August; the theme was biographical articles tagged for copy editing for more than six months (47 articles). Of the 13 who signed up, 11 editors completed 38 copy edits (42,589 words).

September drive: The goals were to remove January, February, and March 2017 from the backlog and to complete all August 2017 Requests (a total of 338 articles). Of the 19 who signed up, 14 editors completed 121 copy edits (267,227 words).

October blitz: This one-week copy-editing blitz ran from 22 through 28 October; the theme was Requests. Of the 14 who signed up, 8 editors completed 20 articles (55,642 words).

November drive: We set out again to remove January, February, and March 2017 from the backlog and to complete all October 2017 Requests (a total of 207 articles). By the end of the month, these goals were reached and the backlog shrank to its lowest total ever, 997 articles, the first time it had fallen under one thousand (click on the graph above to see this amazing feat in graphical form). It was also the first time that the oldest copy-edit tag was less than eight months old. Of the 25 who signed up, 16 editors completed 159 articles (285,929 words).

2018 Coordinator elections: Voting is open for the election of coordinators for the first half of 2018. Please visit the election page to vote between now and December 31 at 23:59 (UTC). Thanks for participating!

Housekeeping note: We do not send a newsletter before (or after) every drive or blitz. To have a better chance of knowing when the next event will start, add the GOCE's message box to your watchlist.

Hello, I received a message saying the article I started for LaMont "ShowBoat" Robinson was proposed for deletion because it's a biography of a living person that lacks references. I looked at it today and I now see there are references listed so I'm wondering if it's still proposed for deletion? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Jehof — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jehof (talkcontribs) 22:56, 27 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]__DTELLIPSISBUTTON__{"threadItem":{"timestamp":"2017-12-27T22:56:00.000Z","author":"Jehof","type":"comment","level":1,"id":"c-Jehof-2017-12-27T22:56:00.000Z-LaMont_\"ShowBoat\"_Robinson","replies":[],"displayName":"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/User:Jehof"}}-->

Hello, I had a question about an edit you did recently, mostly for my own knowledge so I do not repeat any past mistakes! I noticed that you deleted WikiProject Canada from Alice Merton and her works. Would she be covered by the scope of WikiProject Canadian music? I am asking be cause she has ties to Canada. She was raised in Ontario. I am not sure if she has Canadian citizenship but she does have a Canadian accent. Cheers! Thsmi002 (talk) 14:27, 29 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]__DTELLIPSISBUTTON__{"threadItem":{"timestamp":"2017-12-29T14:27:00.000Z","author":"Thsmi002","type":"comment","level":1,"id":"c-Thsmi002-2017-12-29T14:27:00.000Z-WP_Canada_scope","replies":["c-PKT-2017-12-29T15:55:00.000Z-Thsmi002-2017-12-29T14:27:00.000Z"]}}-->

@Thsmi002: Hi Thsmi002 - I removed the WPCanada banner from her talk page because she doesn't identify as Canadian, and while she appears to have lived in Canada (Oakville) for a while it clearly wasn't for a lot of time, so in my opinion she's not in scope. There are a lot of WikiProject banners on her talk page, so it's not like her article is orphaned :). I definitely don't see how her music would be in scope for WikiProject Canadian music - from what I can see, her work was recorded and produced in Europe. It's my opinion that people who worked or resided in Canada for a small portion of their lives would usually not identify as Canadian and therefore would be out of scope for WPCanada. BTW, there's nothing wrong with applying the WPCanada banner per se, but this is Wikipedia and other editors are able to make changes if they see fit. Happy new year! Thank you for the insights! I can see why Merton's case is unique and how opinions can vary. I came across several sources that list her as a variety of nationalities...German-English, Canadian-English, Canadian-German...etc. I believe WPCanada is relevant in this instance because her Canadian upbringing and subsequent moves are a focal part of her career and identity which she wrote about in her debut single "No Roots." FWIW, while obviously not a RS, she mentions her Canadian accent/upbringing across her social media pages. Happy New Year! Hello PKT, thank you for your efforts reviewing new pages!

Announcing the NPP New Year Backlog Drive!

We have done amazing work so far in December to reduce the New Pages Feed backlog by over 3000 articles! Now is the time to capitalise on our momentum and help eliminate the backlog!

The backlog drive will begin on January 1st and run until January 29th. Prize tiers and other info can be found HERE.

Awards will be given in tiers in two categories:

  • The total number of reviews completed for the month.
  • The minimum weekly total maintained for all four weeks of the backlog drive.

NOTE: It is extremely important that we focus on quality reviewing. Despite our goal of reducing the backlog as much as possible, please do not rush while reviewing.
