Recent changes
The system for automatically creating categories for the Babel extension has had several important changes and fixes. One of them allows you to insert templates for automatic category descriptions on creation, allowing you to categorize the new categories. [1][2][3][4][5]
Changes later this week
The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 4 April. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 5 April. It will be on all wikis from 6 April (calendar).
Some older Web browsers will stop being able to use JavaScript on Wikimedia wikis from this week. This mainly affects users of Internet Explorer 11. If you have an old web browser on your computer you can try to upgrade to a newer version. [6]
The deprecated jquery.hoverIntent module has been removed. This module could be used by gadgets and user scripts, to create an artificial delay in how JavaScript responds to a hover event. Gadgets and user scripts should now use jQuery hover() or on() instead. Examples can be found in the migration guide. [7]
Some of the links in Special:SpecialPages will be re-arranged. There will be a clearer separation between links that relate to all users, and links related to your own user account. [8]
You will be able to hide the Reply button in archived discussion pages with a new __ARCHIVEDTALK__ magic word. There will also be a new .mw-archivedtalk CSS class for hiding the Reply button in individual sections on a page. [9][10][11]
Future changes
The Vega software that creates data visualizations in pages, such as graphs, will be upgraded to the newest version in the future. Graphs that still use the very old version 1.5 syntax may stop working properly. Most existing uses have been found and updated, but you can help to check, and to update any local documentation. Examples of how to find and fix these graphs are available.

The rollback of Vector 2022 RfC has found no consensus to rollback to Vector legacy, but has found rough consensus to disable "limited width" mode by default.

BotFunast (Task: The bot is already operational in the Tachelhit Wikipedia. One of its main tasks is editing template tags and categories, and creating new ones when necessary, based on a csv database (that you can find in github) . When adding new pages though, a common problem is to link those to Wikidata. This can be unfeasible by hand in a reasonable amount of time, when hundreds of pages, e.g. categories, are added at once. The idea is to have the bot approved for Wikidata, so it can link the pages to their counterparts in other languages automatically.)

I am having problems with an editor who objects to elements of the above article, and I wonder whether you could help? The issue is not their point of view (which they are welcome to), or even some of the changes that they want, but the fact that they are liable to remove content on the basis of their opinion and without discussion. The article will shortly (on 29 April) be linked at DYK for 24 hours, and I fear that its contents may be disrupted daily until then, and maybe even also on its DYK day.
This issue has happened with this editor several times before, on the talk pages of David Simpson (mayor), Richard Ellis (mayor), George Dawson (builder), H. E. and A. Bown, Walter William Covey-Crump, and on the talk page of Constantine Zochonis, (now in archive 1). As you will see, I have on each occasion made careful and extended attempts to explain the article and its contents, and addressed their every query, but this editor just repeats their opinion every time, even when I change the article in an attempt to appease them. Each time they get their teeth into an article, I wake up every morning to more queries about the same small detail, more complaints about the changes that I made to appease them, more accusations, and not infrequently, new accusations based on the wording of my explanations, saying that my explanations imply new and hidden misdemeanours in the article. This editor has frequently also tagged the article inappropriately, saying that the article has spelling and grammar errors (which is not the case) and asking editors to heavily prune the article without suggestion of discussion. Every time this happens, it causes me severe distress to have to wake up every morning, dreading what I will have to deal with today, because dealing with this editor is impossible - and worse than that - never-ending.
If the issues had been raised by another editor, who behaved normally, the issues themselves would not be a problem, and we could resolve them immediately in most cases. Compromise would be a good way, but this editor cannot do compromise. The issue is the behaviour of this editor.
At the very least, I would be most grateful if the article could be protected from that editor at least until after DYK is over. Ideally, I would be grateful if a way could be found to stop them behaving in this manner. I am at the point of leaving WP due to this behaviour. I took several years to bring the Margery Jackson article to completion, because I needed a second major biography source to balance the article, and make its contents neutral. I put a great deal of work, time and effort into creating articles, but there is no point if this person continues to track my creations and then weighs in with their personal opinion, and will not let go. I don't want to leave WP at all, but I am being driven away by this. Thank you. Your comments are much appreciated. Yes, Commons can be good therapy, e.g. going out and taking photographs for contribution. The other day I went on a long journey to a cathedral to photograph works by a 19th-century sculptor whom the cathedral guides had never heard of, yet the staff pass the sculptor's carved pulpit and reredos every day. And that work is rather fine. So it will be nice to publish a WP article about him - they said they were looking forward to it. Hi, I have a functional theory of everything. wondering how i can edit that out of unsolved problems because it's not unsolved. 137.164.12.107 (talk) 19:40, 2 May 2023 (UTC)__DTREPLYBUTTONSCONTENT__-->__DTELLIPSISBUTTON__{"threadItem":{"timestamp":"20230502194000","author":"137.164.12.107","type":"comment","level":1,"id":"c-137.164.12.107-20230502194000-theory_of_everything","replies":["c-Mike_Peel-20230502200300-137.164.12.107-20230502194000"]}}-->
It's simple: just get it published in a reputable peer-reviewed journal and accepted by the scientific community, then someone else will make that edit for you. Thanks. Recent changes
Last week, Community Tech released the first update for providing better diffs, the #1 request in the 2022 Community Wishlist Survey. This update adds legends and tooltips to inline diffs so that users unfamiliar with the blue and yellow highlights can better understand the type of edits made.
When you close an image that is displayed via MediaViewer, it will now return to the wiki page instead of going back in your browser history. This feature request was voted #65 in the 2023 Community Wishlist Survey. [35]
The SyntaxHighlight extension now supports wikitext as a selected language. Old alternatives that were used to highlight wikitext, such as html5, moin, and html+handlebars, can now be replaced. [36]
Graph Extension update: Foundation developers have completed upgrading the visualization software to Vega5. Existing community graphs based on Vega2 are no longer compatible. Communities need to update local graphs and templates, and shared lua modules like de:Modul:Graph. The Vega Porting guide provides the most comprehensive detail on migration from Vega2 and here is an example migration. Vega5 has currently just been enabled on mediawiki.org to provide a test environment for communities. [38]
Changes later this week
The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 9 May. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 10 May. It will be on all wikis from 11 May (calendar).
Until now, all new OAuth apps went through manual review. Starting this week, apps using identification-only or basic authorizations will not require review. [39]
There will be an A/B test on 10 Wikipedias where the Vector 2022 skin is the default skin. Half of logged-in desktop users will see an interface where the different parts of the page are more clearly separated. You can read more. [41][42]
jquery.tipsy will be removed from the MediaWiki core. This will affect some user scripts. Many lines with .tipsy( can be commented out. OO.ui.PopupWidget can be used to keep things working like they are now. You can read more and read about how to find broken scripts. [43]
