Thanks for uploading File:Flag of Hof Aza.gif. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).
If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Hello Matthew Vanitas, an article I created recently, "Volley pong", was declined for reasons including the fact that it appeared to be a sport created by one person who blogged about it. I removed the link to that blog and replaced it with many links to different people playing volley pong on Youtube. Volley pong is a sport played by many different people in different areas, not just one. I apologize for the confusion, next time I will include a greater number of relevant references and links. I would greatly appreciate if you could review the page "Volley pong" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia_talk:Articles_for_creation/Volley_pong) again because I have resubmitted it for approval. Thanks! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Volleypong (talk • contribs) 01:14, 6 June 2013 (UTC)__DTREPLYBUTTONSCONTENT__-->__DTELLIPSISBUTTON__{"threadItem":{"timestamp":"2013-06-06T01:14:00.000Z","author":"Volleypong","type":"comment","level":1,"id":"c-Volleypong-2013-06-06T01:14:00.000Z-Volley_pong_page_resubmitted","replies":["c-MatthewVanitas-2013-06-06T15:29:00.000Z-Volleypong-2013-06-06T01:14:00.000Z"]}}-->
- Steps in the right direction, but I'll clarify a little further now that I've looked into things a bit. There are a couple of things to address here (though you've got formatting and layout down well, so good there).
- Firstly, establishing that volley pong is "a thing". I did some casual looking around, and it does appears to be a thing that does exist, so that's one check in the box. Your YouTube links are, in the draft phase useful for the "it's a thing" criterion, but the next step...
- WP:Notability. I think this policy is a little poorly named, since people take it personally when you tell them a subject is "not notable". "Notability" in the Wiki sense isn't literally "worth giving a darn about", but has a very specific technical definition: If a topic has received significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject, it is presumed to satisfy the inclusion criteria for a stand-alone article or stand-alone list.
- For example, a YouTube clip of a tournament is interesting, and since it's entirely focused on VP it's "significant", but not "reliable" (since anyone can put anything on YouTube) and not "independent" because people involved in VP are the ones posting it.
- An article about college sports in, say, The Denver Post, which says "and the kids in college these days all love to play beer-pong and volley pong" - that would meet "reliable" (the DP is a serious paper that fact-checks and would lose credibility/money if they're wrong), it's certainly "independent" because they're observing VP from the outside, but if they only have a passing mention it doesn't meet "significant".
- The WP:N policy (which isn't too long and is really useful to read for starting articles) does note: Notability applies to subjects, not every fact in a subject. So if you can establish the overall Notability of VP, then you can fill in some other simple facts (when the big tournament is, very minimal description of rules) using sources that may not be independent.
- Fundamentally, your "do not pass Go do not collect $200" bar to cross is finding some proof that somebody reliable who's not involved in VP found it worth writing about for a little bit. I noticed on GoogleBooks that a few books actually do mention VP, though from the vague descriptions it appears that people may be using the same term for different games. In whatever case, before you do anything at all else for the article, you must establish Notability. If you have WP:N, we positively can have an article on VP (maybe not this exact draft, but at least some kind of article). Lacking WP:N, we can't have an article. So there's your mission. If you can't meet WP:N yet, that's not a permanent obstacle. We can move the draft back to your sandbox, and maybe next year when the Milwaukee Gazette has a human-interest article on the big VP tournament, that will be the catalyst to launch the article. I know this is a lot of explanation, but are you generally tracking? Hi! I do appreciate the feedback. I'm very new to actually creating myy own wiki page and am doing so for a class. I will be going for the second article, namely the response from academia and the media to the article. The research article is the trigger point with other articles and responses derived from later events. That said, I would welcome any advice. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.163.223.38 (talk) 02:44, 10 June 2013 (UTC)__DTREPLYBUTTONSCONTENT__-->__DTELLIPSISBUTTON__{"threadItem":{"timestamp":"2013-06-10T02:44:00.000Z","author":"71.163.223.38","type":"comment","level":1,"id":"c-71.163.223.38-2013-06-10T02:44:00.000Z-Effects_of_Mortality_Salience_on_2004_Presidential_Elections","replies":["c-MatthewVanitas-2013-06-10T18:13:00.000Z-71.163.223.38-2013-06-10T02:44:00.000Z"]}}-->
- Before you move forward on a next article, you need to pause for a second to get a feel for how Wikipedia articles work. Your article Effects of Mortality Salience on 2004 Presidential Elections (let's call the 2004 work described "EMS2PE" from now on, while "article" means the article you wrote just now) has some issues with it, because it's more advocating and describing the argument of the paper than it is about the paper itself. What you describe as a "next article" is actually what should be in this first article.
- We don't have as clear of policies about articles, but I'd expect that generally the rule about books applies: [[Wikipedia:Notability (books)]. Long/short, describing the book/EMS2PE's argument is a minor part of the article, describing theEMS2PE's impact/significance is the key thing. What is positively not allowed is to do your own research to support or refute EMS2PE. For example, if the article says (just a notional example): "Opinions of George W. Bush in Guam showed no decline following the attacks", but you personally take a look at some Guam statistics and append "but that's possibly because Guam only had a 3% approval rating for Bush prior to the attacks, so those 3% were likely strong supporters", then that is WP:Original research and completely not allowed.
- An article in a journal is a secondary source: some authority has gathered raw data and built an argument, all good. Wikipedia (and encyclopedias in general) are tertiary sources, which means they can only present opinions, analysis, etc. that have already been expressed in published works. Tertiary sources can't draw novel conclusions, critique analysis, etc., they can only present concepts already documented.
- What your article reads like right now is a school paper describing and assessing the EMS2PE, not an encyclopedic article. For example, the section The Popularity of President George W. Bush has over 30 footnotes, but best as I can tell they're your notes verifying your take on the Bush context. This analysis of Bush is WP:Original research except where either EMS2PE or a cited critique of the article specifically bring in that context. Similarly in your postscript, "While not addressed by the researchers..." is a full do-not-pass-Go-do-not-collect-$200 moment; if it wasn't addressed in the EMS2PE (or in published analyses of EMS2PE) it absolutely does not belong in the article.
- In other contexts, Original Research is a fundamental part of academia, but it's not part of what makes an encyclopedia. Does this help clear things up somewhat? Any follow-up questions? - Greetings, I'm not necessarily saying the dialect doesn't exist, it's just that we cannot have an article without clear evidence that the dialect does exist and is recognised by academics or the media. I was just concerned that I can't find even a single thing about it on Google mentioning its existence. It is certainly possible that it exists but just no information is available online, in which case we can cite it to a book or other authority, but there has to be something the reader can refer to in order to verify the accuracy of the article; without that the article just can't be credible. It is the #1 newspaper in Chicago (the third largest city in America and one of the largest in the world) and the #8 newspaper in America, according to the latest circulation numbers. It is a reliable source of information. There are NO blogs used as sources. Except for one source, which was LinkedIn, every source was from a radio industry news website with 100% accurate, fact-checked information, or taken from pages within the actual websites of the radio stations he worked/works at. Please look at this more closely once again. Actually check on the links I provided you. I will be resubmitting the article again.

Article for creation: Comparison_of_Dust_Storms_By_Visibility_Range
I'm trying to write the page as a comparison page; somewhat similar to this page but with much less comparison: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_web_browsers
The dust storms are already mentioned in the 'Dust Storms' article. But, my attempt is to breakout the notable storms from the main article to better compare the worst dust storms in history, by the more worse visibility ranges in history.
Then, I'd delete the references to 'visibility ranges' from the main Dust Storms article that would then be compared as the worst dust storms in history in terms of visibility ranges and have the link to the new page within the Dust Storms page, similar to other articles that link to a 'comparison' page that goes into more detail. In this case my objective is worst 'visibility comparisons' and time in history (and present history).

Hi MatthewVanitas, I appreciate your efforts for Mahar article. So, I believe you will support following points
- 1)You have edited “Dalit (Untouchables)” creates unnecessary confusion. This clearly means Dalits are untouchables. However they were untouchables. So, we either need to remove Dalit or Untochables. We can’t keep these two words together. Pointing, Dalits as ex-untouchables OR Mahars as Untouchables is more accurate.
- 2) mrit har (dead aminal takers) and Mahāraṅn̄ce rāṣṭra (land of the Mahars) are very straight forward terms and so these terms don’t need any explanation. The term "great/terrible enemy" (maha meaning great and ari or art meaning enemy) needs to be answered very specifically. Who is enemy? Why enemy? How Mahars became enemy? So I have explained this term.
- 3) Jyotiba Phule is one of the influential personalities on Mahars (The Puzzle of India's Governance: Culture, Context and Comparative Theory, By Subrata K. Mitra, 2005, pp 130). So, his name is very important on this page. According to the he source he is non Mahar but he struggled to bring equality for Mahars.
- 4) Phule says, Mahars were exiled and they had no food so they had to eat animals for their survival. This is how they became (mrit har). Can we combine these two terms in same paragraphs?

- Summeet, you need to use the WP:Edit summary line when you edit, so when someone looks at the History tab they can see why you made a change. Also, when you reverted my changes, you removed a lot of cleanup I did to make the article easier to read, like removing excessive bolding, adding bullets (the dots before each item in a list), etc. Also, you don't need to give the entire biography of Malhar Rao (much less a full infobox) since any reader wanting to know more about him can just click his name. If you look at the History tab, every edit I made has an explanation with it so you can see what and why I changed.
- If you want to add information, that's great, but you must source your information as you add it. You can't just add claims now and say you'll add footnotes later. You must add the footnotes as you add information so that everything is properly sourced. Also, there's a general agreement to not bring up varna in the ledes of articles because it's almost always a controversial issue and best brought up in its own section where we can explain the details of the issue.
- The article still needs a lot of work, particularly as it's often unclear in the article when it is referring specifically to the Hatkar, and when to the Dhangar overall, or to the Bargi (who have their own article, etc). It's good to keep building the article, but everything should be properly sourced, and the article should have a narrative flow rather than be just a listing of individual facts. Let me know if you have any further questions. MatthewVanitas (talk) 15:46, 24 June 2013 (UTC)__DTREPLYBUTTONSCONTENT__-->__DTELLIPSISBUTTON__{"threadItem":{"timestamp":"2013-06-24T15:46:00.000Z","author":"MatthewVanitas","type":"comment","level":3,"id":"c-MatthewVanitas-2013-06-24T15:46:00.000Z-SumeetLokhande-2013-06-24T15:17:00.000Z","replies":[]}}-->
- Also, a lot of your footnotes are from books you presumably found on GoogleBooks, but you don't provide any link or page numbers, etc. One tool I suggest is http://reftag.appspot.com , where you can simply past in a GoogleBooks URL and instantly convert it into a properly-coded Wikipedia footnote. If you can please clean up your footnotes into proper citations (using that tool when they are GoogleBooks cites) that would help greatly. - Being new is fine, but it is very ambitious to do a full re-write of an article when you are very new. I don't speak Marathi or Hindi. I'm going to post you some helpful links on your Talk page for some basic techniques of editing, and also a link to WP:Teahouse, a place where volunteer mentors can offer advice on editing. I can of course answer questions as well.
- Do note, if someone removes an edit of yours, it isn't "lost", it still exists in full in the History tab of the article, so don't get too concerned about it. If you want to work on some text that isn't ready to go into the actual article yet, you can create User:SumeetLokhande/sandbox and use that as a place to edit your text until it is ready to insert. The problem with Hatkar right now is you have whole paragraphs copied from books without proper sourcing (that's WP:Copyvio), lots of confusing phrasing, and generally the article is cluttered and hard to follow. You have added some good material, but until it's cleaned up the article is not easy to understand. I'll keep cleaning for a bit, but also if you see good materials that we should read that aren't ready for the article yet, we can post and discuss them at Talk:Hatkar. Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. - Are you referring to Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/Nadim Karam? And by "remove" do you mean delete all the data, or do you mean withdraw it from current consideration by approvers (it can be resubmitted whenever you like)? If you want it simply all gone, paste the code
{{db-self}} at the very top of the page. If you simply want to withdraw it from current reviewing, just delete the yello box that says Review waiting (in the middle of the current page). Do not delete the pink box explaining the prior Decline, as that is valuable for understanding the history of the draft, so leave that there. You can always hit "resubmit" whenever you're ready to have it viewed again. - EDIT: oh, are you meaning about my comment about how you have two copies of the article on the same page? In that case, just hit "Edit" and delete anything that's not part of your current draft, leaving behind only the current text you want the reviewer to read. If you ever need to go "back in time" to rescue earlier drafts, just open the History tab and every draft ever done is saved there. Thank you for reviewing the article. I am glad you agree with me that "this woman certainly meets WP:Notability criteria". I hope you can help me out with a couple of questions I have that would help me suitably edit the submission:
1. I understand your issue about the footnotes. Can I assume you are OK with the rest of the contents?
2. 7 of 12 footnotes are works by the subject and I will place them under the WORKS heading. However, the other 5 are "independent sources". Around how many are 'sufficient'? (I have seen several articles with fewer sources.)
3. Most of the other "independent sources" are in Bengali language publications. Is it OK to use them?
4. When I use a Bengali language reference (say a magazine or book article), should I translate the title to English?
5. Any other advice would be welcome.
Thanks again. Looking forward to your reply...

- The article overall is pretty solid; the main things you need to do are eliminate subjective words ("poignant", "tragic", etc) for the sake of neutrality, and also provide a few more wikilinks. For example, I'm not Indian, so I have no idea what "imposition of emergency during 1975-77" refers to; in order to link to a specific article without changing your phrase, you use a pipe, "|", like so:
John began his writing career [[World War I|after the war]].. That way the reader sees "after the war" but when they click it goes to World War I. So that's a way to link to a specific concept even when you don't name it directly.
- The other sources aren't great: Bangalpedia is another wiki so not any more authoritative than WP is, so it's okay as a "Further reading" or "External link" but not as a source. So far as "sufficient", ideally everything in the article could be traced to a specific source. Sure, many Wiki articles are poorly sourced, but the goal is to get this published correctly, not just be "better than the worst".
- It is perfectly fine to use Bengali publications, whether available online or only offline, so long as they are from a WP:Reliable source. So not blogs, fansites, forums, but from published books of literary history, academic journal articles, newspapers, etc.
- That's a good question about Bengali references; I don't think it's necessary to translate the title, but do give the publisher, date, etc in English. Note that at the top of your editing window is a "Cite" tool that can help you make formatted footnotes easily.
- Other than that you're doing pretty well. Minor note: when listing books, links, etc. use the bullet "*" at the start of the line rather than numbering them.

in respect to changes in page "Shivaji"
hi Matthew the changes which were done is based on our epic study and can be supported by book references. This history was our academic school syllabus and well known. People of that time were not having any idea about bribing at all and the only way it use to happen is "fight" and "win". Even about the educational status written by writer is wrong one because in India we had long "Gurukul" history where our scholars use to teach our royals all important education in regards to administration, dharma, responsibilities & War methods (Gourilla war methods) so with compare to that time "Shivaji Bhosle" were nominated as scholar and eligible king to be rule the Maratha Empire. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Amon1988 (talk • contribs) 17:52, 27 June 2013 (UTC)__DTREPLYBUTTONSCONTENT__-->__DTELLIPSISBUTTON__{"threadItem":{"timestamp":"2013-06-27T17:52:00.000Z","author":"Amon1988","type":"comment","level":1,"id":"c-Amon1988-2013-06-27T17:52:00.000Z-Shivaji_edits","replies":["c-MatthewVanitas-2013-06-27T19:24:00.000Z-Amon1988-2013-06-27T17:52:00.000Z"]}}-->
- Hello Amon, thanks for writing back! The issue is that information on Wikipedia must be cited to a reliable source. Take a look at the small blue number after the sentence, if you click it it takes you to the WP:Footnote which explicitly says where that information comes from. First off, if you want to put in a different opinion, you need to also put in a very clear footnote. NOT "I/everybody knows this", or "a long history of Maharashtra", but very specifically a book/article, date, page#, and author who's work verifies the claim. Further, when you made your edit you changed the facts but not the footnote. You can understand, this is a problem: if I write "The Battle of Foo was in 1358" and footnote it to Smith's History of Foo, and then someone comes along and changes it to 1359 but doesn't change the footnote, now the reader is inaccurately being told that Smith supports the 1358 date, which is not at all what Smith says. Do you see how that would be misleading to readers? If there are alternate theories that Shivaji attacked these castles rather than used clever subterfuge, then you need to leave the current content, and instead add ", or per some stories succesfully attacked..." and give a very clear footnote to a serious academic source. Does this make sense?
