Thanks for catching this. I should add, the file probably will never go for that page, it is easily replaceable with another (free) image of another person of the Oromo people. It is indeed fair-use on a page of the person themselves, but not here, also not with a rationale. --Dirk BeetstraTC15:30, 13 July 2011 (UTC)__DTREPLYBUTTONSCONTENT__-->__DTELLIPSISBUTTON__{"threadItem":{"timestamp":"2011-07-13T15:30:00.000Z","author":"Beetstra","type":"comment","level":1,"id":"c-Beetstra-2011-07-13T15:30:00.000Z-Thanks!","replies":[],"displayName":"Dirk Beetstra"}}-->

This week, our first multilingual featured article contest was announced. We are aiming to improve the articles on the Declaration of Independence, Constitution, or Bill of Rights to featured or good status in English and other languages. Prizes for winners will be a gift package from the National Archives including a book of your choice or a tote bag, and other swag, plus, of course, a special barnstar.
August 6 backstage pass
Plans are in the works for a meetup and backstage pass event at the National Archives II facility in College Park, MD. There will be a regular social meetup, a discussion with Dominic about WP:NARA, a tour of the building by NARA staff, and then time for a scanathon and editathon in the research rooms and library until the building closes at 5 pm. Keep your schedules open!
The National Archives' Archival Recovery Team (ART) is a team of law enforcement agents and archivists who investigate NARA's lost and stolen documents. They have received media attention ([1], [2], [3], [4], [5], [6], [7], [8]) and would like to request an article be written for the team, if Wikipedians deem it notable. It is hoped that making more information about the group available on Wikipedia will increase public awareness of the documents they are seeking to recover.
Ongoing
Today's Document challenge
The Today's Document challenge is an opportunity for Wikipedians to get their work related to National Archives holdings spotlighted on Archives.gov and the National Archives' tumblr. Each day the National Archives selects a document related to the day's date to showcase. The goal is to get articles related to the selected documents on the main page in ""Did You Know...?" the same day that the National Archives features the document. Alternatively, other appropriate articles related to National Archives holdings not already selected will be used for new documents of the day by NARA staff and posted to their tumblr.
Wikisource
WP:NARA has a sister WikiProject on Wikisource, WS:NARA. On Wikisource, editors transcribe, proofread, and arrange documents. This helps to make little-known documents more discoverable, or well-known documents more searchable, and improves accessibility. See the files being worked on. If you are new to Wikisource and would like to participate, there are experienced Wikisourcerors willing to be mentors.
New contributions
A list of some recent contributions to the project:
The National Archives has hundreds of thousands of digitized documents in its holdings. We are working on a bulk upload to Commons of one particular cache of about 123,000 TIFF master files in the next few days! Once uploaded, these will require a massive community effort to help categorize the files on Commons and add them to articles on Wikipedia or transcribe them on Wikisource.
Inclusion in the online catalog
We are currently working on a system for including links to pages on Wikimedia projects in the National Archives online catalog. The Wikimedia projects are hosting an increasing number of transcriptions of National Archives documents and high-quality image and video files that are not available through NARA's own site. Links to these Wikimedia pages in the documents' actual catalog records will benefit the end user by providing them access to further resources about the documents, and they will also demonstrate the National Archives commitment to supporting Wikimedians' efforts.

"in the case of this edit to Brian Jones Presents the Pipes of Pan at Joujouka, you linked to an interview posted that same day and conducted by someone whose name is similar to your own Wikipedia username"
Yes, of course I did. I wrote the interview and added the link. Is there any "self interest" in the interview? Have you actually read it? What criteria are you using - the independence of the article linked to or the user name making the link? Would a link to the interview be acceptable if it was added by a different user?
Myopic moderation such as you are practicing is actually undermining not protecting, the independence of Wikipedia.

"In contrast, you've linked to your own website no less than 26 times, which raises a flag."
What flag? If those 26 links are independent and useful, which I and many others believe they are, is that a problem? Would 106 links to independent and useful resources be a problem?
You are not judging the usefulness of the links to other users and their own independence. You are judging them by a short-sighted interpretation of rules. That is why I have, and will continue to, use the word myopic.
You seem shy on answering my questions. As before have you read the articles? Have you looked at the web site? If so do you judge the articles there to exhibit "self-interest"?

Hi Gyrofrog. There's a new single-purpose account that's been going around removing references to Somalia and Cushitic groups from various Ethiopia and Eritrea related articles, including sourced material (c.f. "Raaso" and "Raso" are two different and distinct places
Hello mate, you recently proposed to move the "Raaso Article to "Raso" but did you know that these two place are different places?
"Raaso" is an existing Ethiopian town and therefore different from "Raso" for this reason moving this article to "Raso" would be a grave mistake. please note that "Raaso" and "Raso" are two different places, please make some research before reaching this conclusion. Please check the following link to see "Raaso" on Goodel Map. http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?ll=6.5489326,41.786002&z=14&t=h&hl=en-GB maxman 23:39, 14 September 2011 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Maxman (talk • contribs)

Good work expanding West Coast jazz. You strike the right balance (e.g., you know it wasn't all "cool") and you respect the work that was already done, deftly weaving in your additions. I would have done more on the page myself, except I've spread myself a bit thin on Wikipedia and gotten involved in too many other topics.
I'm thinking that you've already added enough that it shouldn't remain a "stub". I've never been sure who is responsible for deciding whether an article is a stub, "start" class, etc. (except of course Good and Featured Articles, for which there are well-known processes). In my opinion, the article should be considered "Start Class" at this point. Keep going and, who knows? you could propel it into Good or Featured territory. I should have said "at least 'start' class". The main point I wanted to make is that it is clearly not a stub anymore. So who is responsible for changing the tag that shows what class it's in? It's standard procedure not to bring up death threats, threats of violence, suicide threats, etc. at the noticeboards, if only because some trolls make threats simply to get attention and the boards are where they look for it. It's also not us everyday editors' jobs to determine whether a threat is credible or not, or whether authorities should be advised of it. When I was doing recent changes patrol, the preferred practice was to a) revert the edit, b) email emergency at wikimedia.org with a header of "Death Threat" and a link to the original edit, c) ask that the edit be oversighted. This deprives the troll of the attention he wants in most cases, and allows someone at the Foundation to make the decision as to whether authorities should be warned. I've seen dozens of death/harm threats over the past few years - sadly, many people think threatening the life of a head of government or head of state is "fun". --NellieBly (talk) 00:51, 22 November 2011 (UTC)__DTREPLYBUTTONSCONTENT__-->__DTELLIPSISBUTTON__{"threadItem":{"timestamp":"2011-11-22T00:51:00.000Z","author":"NellieBly","type":"comment","level":1,"id":"c-NellieBly-2011-11-22T00:51:00.000Z-Death_threats_and_other_random_excitement","replies":["c-NellieBly-2011-11-22T20:06:00.000Z-NellieBly-2011-11-22T00:51:00.000Z"]}}-->

Response Thing is, most threats of violence are just trolling nonsense or overwrought rage, but "most" doesn't mean "all"; some are real, and it's above regular editors' pay grades to make that determination. That's why we have an emergency address: specifically for threats of violence.
Unfortunately, it's common for editors to be so terrified of being seen (or of seeing themselves) as the over-reacting, hysterical nutcase convinced that every threat is a sign of impending doom that they go to the absolute extreme opposite and treat all threats with bored, dismissive contempt. But neither extreme response is helpful. The middle way - quietly revert the edit, e-mail emergency with a report, ask for oversight, don't report it publicly - denies the trolls the attention they crave *and* ensures that credible threats are handled by more experienced staff.
I was once a member of a forum where it was standard practice to mock and ridicule threats of violence but otherwise ignore them. Then one of the threats turned out to be real, and the ensuing publicity - the guy murdered two kids - destroyed the forum. Wikipedia really doesn't need that kind of publicity. --NellieBly (talk) 02:20, 23 November 2011 (UTC)__DTREPLYBUTTONSCONTENT__-->__DTELLIPSISBUTTON__{"threadItem":{"timestamp":"2011-11-23T02:20:00.000Z","author":"NellieBly","type":"comment","level":3,"id":"c-NellieBly-2011-11-23T02:20:00.000Z-NellieBly-2011-11-22T20:06:00.000Z","replies":[]}}-->

The WikiProject Report would like to focus on WikiProject Jazz for a Signpost article. This is an excellent opportunity to draw attention to your efforts and attract new members to the project. Would you be willing to participate in an interview? If so, here are the questions for the interview. Just add your response below each question and feel free to skip any questions that you don't feel comfortable answering. Multiple editors will have an opportunity to respond to the interview questions. If you know anyone else who would like to participate in the interview, please share this with them. Have a great day. -Mabeenot (talk) 00:16, 18 December 2011 (UTC)__DTREPLYBUTTONSCONTENT__-->__DTELLIPSISBUTTON__{"threadItem":{"timestamp":"2011-12-18T00:16:00.000Z","author":"Mabeenot","type":"comment","level":1,"id":"c-Mabeenot-2011-12-18T00:16:00.000Z-WP_Jazz_in_the_Signpost","replies":[]}}-->
Hi, you attended the scanathon at the National Archives in October. I recently noticed that most participants have yet to upload scanned documents to Commons, so I just wanted to check and see if you have any files to upload. Please use the October 2011 NARA Backstage Pass category when uploading (and tag any files you already uploaded without it) so we can track them. Any documents you upload will also cataloged by NARA, as well as being available for Wikimedians to use, so this is important! Also, if you have any photos from the tour or other aspects of the event, please be sure to upload those as well. Thanks! You are invited to the National Archives ExtravaSCANza, taking place every day next week from January 4–7, Wednesday to Saturday, in College Park, Maryland (Washington, DC metro area). Come help me cap off my stint as Wikipedian in Residence at the National Archives with one last success!
This will be a casual working event in which Wikipedians are getting together to scan interesting documents at the National Archives related to a different theme each day—currently: spaceflight, women's suffrage, Chile, and battleships—for use on Wikipedia/Wikimedia Commons. The event is being held on multiple days, and in the evenings and weekend, so that as many locals and out-of-towners from nearby regions1 as possible can come. Please join us!
