The mission of Ross Institute for Advanced Study and Innovation in Education is to provide all children with the skills, values and sensibilities to succeed in our new global society.
Ross Institute was founded by Courtney Sale Ross in 1996 with the understanding that future generations will require advanced problem solving and decision making capabilities, high level communication skills and an ability to collaborate with people across many different cultures. Ross Institute operates as a nexus for scholars and experts to address these challenges through applied research, training, modeling and dissemination. The Institute is also engaged in ongoing efforts to transfer the Ross Model to public education. With Ross School Ross School (East Hampton, New York) serving as the model school, Ross Institute offers consulting to municipalities, school districts and individual schools across the globe interested in learning about and experiencing the Ross Model. As a research school where innovative ideas are applied and tested with the guidance of scholars and mentors, Ross School serves as the prototype for all Ross Network Schools. These include Ross Tensta Gymnasium in Stockholm, Sweden and the former Ross Global Academy Charter School in New York City, which served students from all five boroughs in grade K-8 from 2006-2011.
Ross Institute has ongoing mentorship from an array of distinguished professionals. Cultural historian William Irwin Thompson and Mathematician Ralph Abraham who were co-architects of the Ross Spiral Curriculum, continue to provide ongoing mentoring to Ross Institute and Ross School teachers. Other important mentors include Harvard's Howard Gardner, a cognitive psychologist, who was the initial pedagogy and assessment advisor for the Ross Curriculum; mind, brain and education expert Kurt W. Fischer; neuroscientist Antonio Damasio and Hanna Damasio; music producer Quincy Jones; global education expert Charles Fadel [1]; Inventor / Scientist Danny Hillis; Mathematician Victor Katz; Scientist / Mathematician Bruce Stewart; Cultural Psychologist Carola Suárez-Orozco; Anthropologist/Psychologist Marcelo Suárez-Orozco; and Psychologist / Sociologist Sherry Turkle among others.
