Hiddensee ist eine deutsche Insel in der Ostsee. Sie liegt unmittelbar westlich vor Rügen und gehört zum Landkreis Vorpommern-Rügen in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Die gesamte Insel gehört mit einigen angrenzenden Inseln zum Gebiet der Gemeinde Insel Hiddensee.
Name
Der Inselname taucht als „Hedinsey“ in der Prosa-Edda auf und als „Hithinsö“ in den Gesta Danorum des Saxo Grammaticus. Beides bedeutet so viel wie „Insel des Hedin“ oder „Hedinsinsel“.[1] Der legendäre Norwegerkönig Hedin soll hier um eine Frau oder auch nur um Gold gekämpft haben. Unter dänischer Herrschaft war offiziell „Hedins-Oe“ gebräuchlich. Bis 1880 hieß die Insel auch in deutschen Karten noch „Hiddensjö“, 1929 in deutschen Reiseführern noch „Hiddensöe“. Hiddensee is a German island in the Baltic Sea. It is located directly west of Rügen and belongs to the county of Vorpommern-Rügen in the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The entire island, along with other bordering islands, belongs to the community of Hiddensee.
Name
The name of the island first appeared as "Hedinsey" in the Prose-Edda and as "Hithinsö" in Saxo Grammaticus's Gesta Danorum. Both can roughly be translated as "Isle of Hedin" or "Hedin's Island", named after the legendary Norwegian king Hedin who was supposed to have fought there for either a suitable wife or monetary gain. Under Danish rule it was officially referred to as "Hedins-Oe", yet until 1880 the island was still documented on maps as "Hiddensjö" and as "Hiddensöe" by German tour guides until 1929. The name "Hiddensee" is a relatively recent development, due to German influence and regularization.
