I have completed List of former United States Senators. I just have to go back through and make some tweaks here and there with dates and parties and such.

I am also working on List of former members of the United States House of Representatives.

• To convey a sense of my progress on this project, I have devised a 50 x 25 grid. The 50 represents the 50 states, while the 25 represents the letters of the alphabet minus the letter X, as no one with a last name beginning with the letter X has ever been elected to Congress. There are 1,250 squares in total on this grid, each square corresponding to all representatives from one state whose last name begins with the same letter (everyone from Alabama whose last name begins with A, for example, would be one square). Thinking in these terms, as of 3:20 PM on August 3, 2007, I have completed 1,228 out of 1,250 squares, leaving 22 squares left to complete. Percentage-wise, that means that I have completed 98.24% of all squares.

• I have completed 44 of 50 states, with only Illinois, Massachusetts, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Virginia still incomplete. I have also completed 19 letters of the alphabet (20 if you count X) leaving the letters B, C, H, M, S, and W. Putting the two together, here is what remains on the grid as of 3:20 PM on August 3, 2007:
  • Illinois: H, M
  • Massachusetts: B
  • New York: B, C, H, M, S, W
  • Ohio: B, C, H, M, S
  • Pennsylvania: B, H, M, S, W
  • Virginia: B, H, M
