CJ Madsen

Christopher J. (CJ) Madsen is a American choral composer, pianist and conductor most noted for his composition One Fold, One Shepherd, a 50-minute oratorio based on the text of 3 Nephi in The Book of Mormon.[1]

Personal life

Madsen learned to play piano at a young age and began composing soon thereafter.[2] A member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Madsen served a two year mission in Raleigh, North Carolina, before marrying his high school sweetheart, Samm.[1]

He and his wife are the parents of two children.

Career/Education

Madsen released his first professional album, A Joy Beyond Measure, which featured original hymn arrangments with him as pianist and one original composition entitled "Psalm of Nephi," for which he sang vocals. He and his siblings co-founded Atrium of Light, to produced the album.[3]

Madsen graduated from Brigham Young University with a bachelor's degree in Music with an emphasis in Piano Performance in May 2019. He is now pursuing a Master's degree in Choral Conducting as a graduate student at the same university.[1] He has accompanied and/or participated in nearly all of the BYU choirs and vocal ensembles, and continues to accompany and participate in them regularly.[2] He also often provides musical numbers for or otherwise participates musically in BYU Devotional broadcasts.[4]

Several of his hymn arrangments have been recorded by various choirs at BYU, including We Three Kings.[5]

In addition to English, CJ also speaks Spanish and some German. He also plays the violin, though piano is his primary instrument.

One Fold, One Shepherd

Madsen orginally wrote One Fold, One Shepherd as part of a 2016 research project coinciding with a study abroad to Austira.[6] Although Madsen did not speak German at the time, the work premiered in Vienna with members of the study abroad group singing it in the German language. He has since translated it into English, orchestrated it, and performed it numerous times with choirs and orchestras in the Provo, Utah, area.[7]

In November 2019, the work was released as a professional album on CD and digitial download, featuring members of the Utah Symphony and Orchestra at Temple Square, the A Voice for Good choir, and mixing by Glen Neibar.[8]
