0chain (ZeroChain) is a blockchain platform, designed to have fast finality and zero cost to the user. It utilizes 2D Byzantine DPoS consensus protocol (2D-BPoS).

Early claims of sub-second finality were only achieved on a regional testnet. When global nodes were added, finality times averaged around 1.2 seconds.

The platform has several distinct node types, miners, sharders and blobbers.

It has a self-forking protocol to create independent chains for specific industries.

The zero cost model allows users to stake a number of ZCN tokens for an agreed period to receive storage or distributed computing services. At the end of the period, the user receives their tokens back, hence zero cost. The service providers are paid through interest generated (from the clients stake), therefore inflation is an issue. Challenges are contrived by other network nodes to ensure service provision to secure the interest award.

Service providers are required to lock ZCN tokens in order to offer services on the network. These locked tokens can be seized in the event of fraud or foul play, acting as a self regulating mechanism.
