Morning Edition was BBC Radio 5's breakfast programme from 1990 to 1994.

The programme aired daily from 6.30am until 9am and was broadcast every weekday throughout Radio 5's time on air, as well as on Saturdays until mid 1992 with a Sunday version of the programme, Sunday Edition, beginning at the later time of 7.30am.

1992 saw changes to the programme. On 17th February, Danny Baker replaced Sarah Ward and Jon Briggs as host of the weekday programmes [1] and on 15 August 1992 the weekend programmes were relaunched and were renamed as Weekend Edition.[2] Mark Curry took over as presenter and the programme's length at the weekend was extended to 9.30am, with a 6.30am start time on both days.

The first edition of the programme was aired on Radio 5's second day on air - the station had launched at 9am the previous day - and finished on the station's final broadcast day.[3][4]

Content

The programme aired news and sport bulletins every 30 minutes, city-by-city weather and travel news, a link up with a radio station from elsewhere across the globe, features and a broad mix of music.[5]

Five Aside was BBC Radio 5's drive time programme for the majority of the station’s time on air.

Described as "reflecting life in the UK,[1] the programme also featured regular news and sport updates as well as a broad mix of music.

The programme was broadcast each weekday between 4.35pm and 7.20pm (7.15pm from September 1991), although the very first edition of the programme was extended until 7.40pm to carry commentary on the 1990 European Athletics Championships[2] However the programme was shortened in March 1993, ending at 6.30pm. Also, during the summer months, live sports coverage meant that the programme sometimes started at a later time and occasionally it wasn't broadcast at all.

Initially hosted by Martin Kelner, Sue McGarry and Julian Worricker took over as the programme's presenters at the start of 1991.

The programme ended six months before Radio 5 was replaced by BBC Radio 5 Live when a new show, John Inverdale's Drive-In, was launched on 25 October 1993.[3]

Greatest Hits Radio UK

Greatest Hits Radio UK is a DAB radio station serving the United Kingdom, as part of Bauer’s Greatest Hits Radio network.

The station launched on 7 January 2019.[1] It relays Greatest Hits Radio North West programming but with UK wide news & information, traffic bulletins and advertising.

Availability

The station broadcasts across most of the UK on DAB (Digital Radio) using various local multiplexes.[2]

In June 2020, the station replaced Heat Radio on Freeview 716.[3]

In December 2022, the station replaced Scala Radio on Sky 0151.[4]

Programming

Greatest Hits Radio UK broadcasts from Bauer’s studios in Manchester, Liverpool and Birmingham, Edinburgh plus Bauer's Golden Square headquarters in Soho.

News

Bauer’s Manchester newsroom broadcasts national news bulletins hourly from 6am to 7pm on weekdays and from 9am to 1pm on Saturdays and Sundays. Headlines are broadcast on the half-hour during weekday breakfast and drivetime shows, alongside national traffic bulletins.

At all other times, mainly evening and overnight, hourly national bulletins originate from Sky News Radio.
