Gerry Li (a.k.a. 李嘉睿，born 1996) is a digital artist and fine-art photographer based in Hong Kong. His work explores the intersections of time, space, and collective memory through the integration of emerging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Virtual Reality (VR), and 3D scanning. Li was born in China, and later moved to Hong Kong, where he currently resides and works. From 2019 to 2020, Li participated in the Hong Kong International Photo Festival (HKIPF) Incubation programme. During this period, he was mentored by photographer Wing Shya, which led to the development of his early professional projects. [2][5]

Li’s artistic practice focuses on the "inner world" of human experience. His projects often involve the reinterpretation of familiar urban realities into immersive digital environments. He utilizes a variety of technical tools, including Unreal Engine, LiDAR scanning, Neural Radiance Fields (NeRF), and 3D Gaussian Splatting. [3][6]

In 2020, Li held his first solo exhibition, Eternal Light in the Darkness, at PMQ in Central, Hong Kong. This series utilized long-exposure photography to express themes of timelessness and "inner energy." The work was noted for reflecting the socio-political environment of Hong Kong circa 2019 through a personal lens. Key works from this period include Rebirth, The Crossing, and Lovers Bridge. [1][5]

In 2022, Li collaborated with composer Austin Leung and curator Icy Lai on Post-human Spectacle. For this performance, Li used StyleGAN2, a machine learning method, to transform cityscape photography into audio-reactive visuals. [4] In 2023, he developed the Generated Memories series. A notable entry in this series, Generated Memories – ArtLane, was inspired by the urban revitalization project in Sai Ying Pun. The project used LiDAR scanning and point-cloud rendering to transform local residents' memories of the neighborhood into a VR experience. This work explored the diminishing nature of physical spaces and their transition into collective digital memory. [3][6]

Eternal Light in the Darkness (2020): A photography series focused on light as a symbol of vitality and eternity. Post-human City (2022): A single-channel projected video utilizing AI to manipulate urban imagery. Generated Memories – ArtLane (2023): A VR/XR installation exploring the relationship between human beings and urban spaces. Embers of Memory(2024): A project utilizing NeRF technology to reconstruct reality through abstract forms, inspired by the artist's experiences in Wuhan. [10]
