Fartbarf is a three-piece experimental electronic dance band that was formed in the South Bay of Los Angeles, California. Consisting of 66.6 percent analog synthesizers and 33.3 percent live drums, their music breaks unprecedented ground as they push progressive sound to the limits, mixing genres together with very minimal instrumentation and extreme high energy.

Robotic, and somewhat unpredictable malfunctions create their live sound, as its foundation is built on vintage analog synthesizers which notoriously drift out of tune depending on humidity, heat, age, how long they've been turned on, etc. Conceptually, they play with the idea of the futuristic primate. Although electronic in sound, part of their appeal is that they are not a computer band at all. They refuse to use all available technology at hand (including computers), and play music that sonically could be considered ahead of it's time, yet appear as three ambiguous Neanderthal's when taking the stage to prevent the public's knowledge of who's who.

Typical expectations are a mess of tangled patch cables covering the floor, draping from one synthesizer to the next, an assault of sound hitting frequencies and decibels sometimes only dogs can hear, grotesque Neanderthal masks and bright orange NASA jumpsuits (sometimes substituted for bleached white milkmen uniforms with black belts and button down shirts neatly tucked in).

The band has faced some obstacles along the way as a result of their name. In early 2010, they were scheduled to perform with E-40 at the Anaheim Grove, but got rejected last minute for that reason alone. Many Southern California venues have changed the band’s name for their marquee, while others just refuse to add it at all. Even the band members themselves aren't thrilled when asked for explanations on why it was chosen.

Despite the minor difficulties booking shows with their name, Fartbarf has already performed nearly everywhere and with anyone. The spectrum of live shows in 2009 alone show this to be true, ranging from small house parties in Orange County, CA, to annual mini-festivals in Cleveland, Ohio that pay homage to 80's synth-pop pioneers DEVO, to massive U.K. festivals in Scotland that included major name and relevant artists of today such as Blondie, Vampire Weekend, Aphex Twin, Xavier de Rosnay of Justice, Busy P, Crystal Castles, The Strokes, and Doves. Quite a feat for a DIY band that has limited amounts of music for public consumption.
