Mark Laws started playing football for Abbey Youth in 1979. His first manager was Jim O'Dea. He went on to play for Abbey Youth for 5 seasons winning players player of the year 4 times. In 1981 he decided to support Tottenham Hotspur after watching Ricky Villa's goal against Manchester City in the centenary cup final of 1981. After a year at Cheshunt FC he joined Field End where for 2 consecutive seasons won the players player of the year.

Mark was then scouted by Orient where he played against QPR at loftus Road when Jim Smith was manager. He had a great game but gave up after the in crowd was not for him and his parents. His captain that day was Adrian Whitbread who went on to play for Orient and Swindon.
