Brown Book is an upcoming mystery detective film, shot in Miami, Florida and on the Coral Gables campus at the University of Miami. The film is an independent short-feature, with a runtime of about an hourglass. Brown Book is written, produced and directed by Luke Beekman^[1], starring Travis Duncan^[2] as Brown, actors Jonathan Sanchez, Annette Navarro, Giordan Diaz, Ross Papito, Juan Gonzolas and Steven Rico Hasbun rounding out the cast of sleuth-seeking college students with Mitchell Lemos as geometry professor with an angle.

The film features original score by Luke Beekman, and will premiere this spring in Miami as well as online, although the format of an internet release is yet to be determined.

The plot draws inspiration from the Encyclopedia Brown book series, and though author Donald J. Sobol declined an appearance in the film, he gave a go to the project before production and graciously signed four original hardbacks^[3][4][5][6] of Encyclopedia Brown belonging to the care of University of Miami's Richter Library.

Travis Duncan emboldens the role of Brown, a young man in college, conflicted in the search for higher meaning after his father's disappearance six weeks ago. Estranged since the absence, cousin Black (Jonathan Sanchez) makes a rebellious appearance at Brown's college, and when they arrive back home, the set of Encyclopedias are found strewn off the shelves and across the tile living room floor. Classic as the converse on his feet, Brown steps up as detective, stacking clues with cousin Black, intersecting paths with mindful classmate Carla (Annette Navarro), and referencing Wikipedia^[7] for the information he needs to look past the gameplaying goofballs with goods, to go where he knows in hopes of finding the truth about his father back at the beginning.

The film was written by Luke Beekman in the winter of 2009-2010 in Miami, Florida, and is an original work. Workshopping the script early that spring, the director of photography, actors, and fellow screenwriting students assisted in the necessary steps in adapting the Brown script from its basis in short mystery fiction, to form a character and a story that could stand independent from the specifics of the books, as well as having the ability to carry a much larger story arc.

Brown Book is a complete storyline, though it was written with potential for the future.

Brown Book was shot on a shoestring budget with a small crew. Director of Photography Andrew Schear used digital video paired with 35mm film lenses; all of the cinematography was accomplished with an entirely upsidedown image using a Redrock M2 lens adapter minus a flip attachment. Sound, Grip and Gaffing were the sole responsibilities of Jorge Gonzalez Diaz, and Anni Bertot assisted as Second Producer and Director.

Filming wrapped after a six-week production last May, and is in the final stages of Post-Production and Sound Recording.

Original music by Luke Beekman will accompany the film, and though there will be no official soundtrack for Brown Book, songs Welcome to the Future^[8] and 'Light at the End of the Photograph' will be included as part of a solo piano album by Luke Beekman to be released online later this year.
