How to write an article...
The main thing to remember is that Wikipedia is an encyclopedia - not an episode guide! Keep storylines as brief as possible.
- Infobox, see Article Example below.
- Article opening, see below.
- Backstory, a brief background of the character, if any. Do not include in-show storylines.
- Character creation/casting, include sources, quotes, if any, of character's creation/arrival and departure.
- Development, the character's development throughout the series. Include Personality and identity, quotes. Main storylines, quotes, sources, information etc. Always in past tense.
- Storylines, years the storylines were within and brief writing of these. Under the storylines, add the character's dates, e.g. 1995-2009 or 1995-1998, 1999-2009, different sections if character left etc. Do not list storylines under different sections.
- Reception, awards the portrayer has received for playing the character, including sources and any newspaper/website's views on the character. No forums.
- References, citations needed for any information, Development, the character’s arrival/departure, Reception etc.
- External links, links to the character profile on the official Channel 4 website, written like: [http://www.channel4.com/hollyoaks/characters/johnsmith John Smith] on the [http://www.channel4.com/hollyoaks Channel 4 website]
- Templates, Hollyoaks template ({{Hollyoaks}}) the any family or student templates. Hollyoaks template always on top.
- Categories, character's year of introduction ([[Category:1995 introductions]]), Hollyoaks character ([[Category:Hollyoaks characters]]), any additional category that relates to character (e.g. [[Category:Fictional prisoners]])

Johnathan Alan "John" Smith is a fictional character from the long-running Channel 4 soap opera Hollyoaks, played by Joe Bloggs. Originally portrayed by John Doe, the character first appeared in 1995 as one of the show's original characters and made his final appearance in 2009.
RELATIONS: When adding relations in the Infobox, it is not required to write after the name how they are related or if they are deceased. OCCUPATION: If the character is deceased or left the show, the last know job of them should be left. DATES: Remember when adding dates in the years parameter, to use the en dash (–) and for open dates, those still in the show, use the em dash (—). Instead of writing a date like 2002–2009, it should be written like 2002–09, however for a character who first appears in one century and leaves in the next, it should be 1999–2009.

What can you do?
The main aim of the WikiProject is to maintain and improve Hollyoaks articles on Wikipedia:
- Rewrite pages and ensure all articles are kept in tense and with brief storyline summaries.
- Update article images with screenshots of the character.
- Acquire sources for storylines and older characters.
- Add images and expand articles of older characters.
Rules
As with every Wikipedia article, there are some rules to follow:
- Do not just remove references if they are in your way whilst editing, there will be somewhere that it belongs.
- Never upload images for the character that include other character's or show the character from a distance, they same applies to promotional shoots.
- In family templates, do not add those who are not family members (e.g. Craig Dean in the McQueen template). Also do not add members who do not have an article, apart from those in minor character pages.
- If a character marries someone, it does not necessarily mean they have changed their surname. As for nicknames, do not add pet names they are called by some characters (e.g. Jacqui McQueen should not be referred to as 'Jac' at any time.)
- If a character leaves, do not change their opening sentence to say, for example, Sarah Barnes was a fictional character..., as she still is a character from Hollyoaks.
- Do not quote characters from within the show, especially when quoting in the 'Personality and identity' section as the character is likely to be biased and the information may be false.
- Remember continuity (e.g. Tina Reilly died on sister Jacqui's birthday, 13 October, however this episode was broadcast on 17 October, therefore some editors may assume her D.O.D is on 17 and not 13.)
- As previously mentioned, Wikipedia is an encyclopedia – not an episode guide. (See also, Wikipedia:What Wikipedia is not)
- Do not add trivia of characters, for example on Debbie Dean's article, it previously stated "...It is unknown if she knows about her brother Jake's sectioning to a mental institute..." This is trivia and should not be added.
