The Inọu (Ayanran) dialect is one of four dialects of the Ukaan language cluster(ISO 639-3 kcf). Although linguists often refer to the entire cluster as "Ukaan," this term is not universally accepted by speakers of the individual dialects, including Inọu. In fact, the speakers do not have a cover term for the entire language cluster, instead using the names of the individual dialects.
Geographically, the dialects are spoken in the following locations:
- Inọu: Ayanran
- Ayegbe: Ishẹ
- Ikaan: Ikakumo
- Igau: Auga
A recent study by Mr. Samuel Akande, a native speaker of Inọu and Ikaan and a linguistics student at Federal University Lokoja, argues that Inọu should be considered a distinct language. His research highlights the following areas of divergence between Inọu and other Ukaan dialects, particularly Ikaan:
1. Phonology: Inọu exhibits a unique sound shift from /kp/ to /kw/ and /gb/ to /gw/, whereas Ikaan and other dialects retain /kp/ and /gb/.
2. Grammar: Inọu employs a distinct verb conjugation system and pronoun forms.
3. Lexicon: Inọu has a significant number of unique words, accounting for 30% of its vocabulary.
4. Syntax: Inọu displays a distinct sentence structure (SVO).
5. Semantics: Inọu and other dialects have undergone semantic shifts, resulting in words with the same pronunciation but different meanings. Examples include:
- "Ishunm" means "back" in Inọu but "head" in Ikaan.
- "Ishishi" means "ground" in Inọu but "outside" in Ikaan.
- "Oyin" means "child" in Inọu but "teeth" in Ikaan.
Based on these differences, Akande concludes that Inọu should be recognized as a distinct language due to:
1. Limited mutual intelligibility.
2. Lexical similarity below the threshold.
3. Significant grammatical and phonological differences.
4. Sociolinguistic factors supporting separate language status.
