Research:

With the advances of computer software and hardware technologies, the web will be available for education at anytime & anywhere. The applications of Intelligent Agents (IA) can be applied to many fields as learning-aide tools such as web-based learning on the web, animated pedagogical agent, coursetable system at secondary school level, learning simulation, knowledge guider, course recommending system, …etc.

Whether the intelligent agents can help students’ learning on the distance education. There are two critical issues. One is “What kinds of agent should be needed for education?” and “How is an agent system to interact with educational members such as learners or teachers?” Through the theoretical phase during the past two years (1999~2000), I am interested in writing some practical systems based on Agent-Oriented Software Engineering (AOSE) with UML(Unified Model Language) ,a visual modeling tools for object-oriented analysis/design. The UML modeling can be used to validate the appropriate structure of IA. Currently, I choose JADE system as a development platform to develop multi-agent system(MAS).

Now, I am teaching an artificial intelligence course at graduate institute of science education and focusing on knowledge and ontology. An ontology associates vocabulary terms with entities identified in the conceptualization and provides definitions to constrain the interpretations of these terms. In order for information from different sources to be integrated, there needs to be a shared understanding of the relevant domain. Knowledge representation formalisms provide structures for organizing this knowledge, but provide no mechanisms for sharing it. Ontologies provide a common vocabulary to support the sharing and reuse of knowledge.
