What is referred to here as Detective Fiction or Mystery Fiction has expanded in recent years to include spies, jihadists, Islamic extremists and the various agents and agencies that track them down. Recently, author David Ignatius turned in a highly authoritative novel staged in hotbeds of terrorism called, "Body of Lies." Stella Rimington, the former head of Britain's security service MI5, wrote a crisp suspense thriller called "Secret Asset" about a mole in the service who prevents its agents from taking down a terrorist cell in London. Examples, these days, abound.
My reading -- and reviewing on my "Critical Mystery Tour" (http://variagate.com/criticalmysterytour.htm?wik) -- clearly indicates that this strain of mystery thriller subject matter, spawned by the events and aftermath of 9/11, could now be put in the context of a separate sub-genre that should be added to the pages of "Detective" fiction.
