Template:Chapman code/doc
| This is a documentation subpage for Template:Chapman code. It may contain usage information, categories and other content that is not part of the original template page. |
A Chapman code is a three-letter abbreviation widely used in genealogical sources, and other circles by imitation, for
- a part of the British Isles ('ENG', 'CHI', 'IOM', 'IRE', 'SCO', 'WAL')
- a county (1972 counties and regions, 1888 counties and historic counties all have codes)
- Channel Islands
{{Chapman code}} is used to display the Chapman code for a place, or the place-name associated with the Chapman code. It can provide the references used in, for example, {{Genuki}}
Usage
| {{Chapman code|countyname}} | generates the Chapman code for a county / region |
| or | |
| {{Chapman code|code|output=name}} | generates the place-name from the Chapman code |
Parameters
The template takes one position parameter, {{{1}}} and may have a named parameter:
- To enter a placename and output its Chapman code:
{{{1}}}(required): The place-name
- To enter a Chapman code and output the placename:
{{{1}}}(required): The Chapman code, output(optional): should be given as |output=name
Examples
| Template | Result |
|---|---|
{{Chapman code|Aberdeenshire}} |
ABD |
| {{Chapman code|ABD|output=name}} | Aberdeenshire |
{{Chapman code|West Riding of Yorkshire}} |
WRY |
| {{Chapman code|WRY|output=name}} | West Riding of Yorkshire |
| Variant versions of county names are accepted, so: | |
{{Chapman code|Devon}} |
DEV |
{{Chapman code|Devonshire}} |
DEV |
Note
The code is attached to the name, not the concept, so "CAM" is the code used for 'Cambridgeshire'; whether that is the modern local government county, the 1888 county, or the historic county, all with very different areas.
