Tatiana Andrea Calmell del Solar Ortega is a Peruvian actress, model, activist, and beauty pageant titleholder who holds the title of Miss Peru 2024.
In 2022, she was first runner-up in her national pageant giving her the right to represent Peru at the Miss International 2022 pageant where she reached the Top three. Two years later, she came back to achieve her goal of winning her country's main title and represented her country at Miss Universe 2024 held in Mexico City.
Biography and Career
Early Years
Calmell was born on July 22, 1994 in Lima, Peru.[1] From a very young age she was fascinated by the world of catwalks and participated in several television commercials and beauty pageants.[1][2]
Her first approach to modeling occurred at the age of fourteen. She competed in the Elite Model Look[3][2] alongside other models Janick Maceta and Alondra García Miró.[2]
She studied communication sciences at the Universidad San Martín de Porres.[3] In parallel, she continued working on advertising campaigns and fashion shows for local designers; She was the image of brands such as Ilaria and Tous.[4]
In 2013, she participated in the reality show Peru's Next Top Model on ATV,[5] where she demonstrated her talent in different challenges. However, during a photo shoot, she expressed her discomfort due to inappropriate touching by a model, which affected her performance and resulted in her elimination after receiving criticism from the jury. This event, far from discouraging her, motivated her to move forward and continue her career. [5]
TV and Cinema
In 2019, she ventured into acting, starring in the primetime telenovela Princesas de América Televisión, playing Danielle Coronado, a character inspired by the literary work Cinderella by the Brothers Grimm5 and shared the role with other actresses Fiorella Pennano, Priscila Espinoza and Flavia Laos. Due to her brilliant performance on stage, she not only established herself as an exceptional talent, but also opened the doors to great popularity among the public.5
Calmell announced that the recording of the second season of Princesas has concluded, where it will now be called Brujas. After participating at Miss International, she pursued an acting career and debuted in 2024, in the movie, Bienvenidos al paraíso.
Calmell announced her participation in the Miss Peru 2022 pageant, which was a surprise to many, given that followers of beauty pageants considered her an ideal candidate to wear the Peruvian sash at Miss Universe. On June 14, 2022, the final of Miss Peru 2022 was held, where she placed as first runner-up, being crowned as Peru's representative for the Miss International 2022 pageant to be held in Tokyo, Japan.
Miss International 2022
During her reign, Calmell managed to excel in all her activities, establishing herself as one of the favorites to win the title of Miss International;9 she won the Missosology's Choice Awards, an annual award from the prestigious Missosology website for outstanding contestants among the four largest beauty pageants in the world, including Miss World, Miss Earth, Miss Universe and Miss International. On December 13, 2022, the final of the pageant was held, where she placed second runner-up, thus making history by returning Peru to the honor roll after more than 55 years, and being the first Peruvian to be part of the top three finalists in the history of the pageant.11
On September 13, 2023, Calmell handed over her Miss International Peru crown to her successor Camila Díaz, and at that time she considered her foray into pageants to be over due to coming of age, and by chance, during the coronation, the elimination of the age limit to participate in Miss Universe was announced and made official, surprising Calmell and motivating her to aspire to the title of Miss Peru.
Miss Peru 2024
After making her debut in the film Welcome to Paradise, Calmell announced her participation in Miss Peru 2024. Her previous experience and tenacity made her a favorite for the national title. On June 9, 2024, the final of the pageant was held. Calmell represented Talara and competed with 34 candidates in Plaza Grau, Callao; and at the end of the event she was crowned the winner and was crowned by her predecessor Camila Escribans.12
Miss Universe 2024
After her victory at Miss Peru 2024, she will travel to Mexico in November where she represented Peru at Miss Universe 2024, where international missologists see her as one of the great favorites for the universal crown, "the favoritism I have received is because of my work, and I take it with great humility, it is the reflection and the potential that they see in me to be able to carry out this work, because in the end, being Miss Universe is a responsibility of a full year, traveling around the world, knowing different realities, and I am very excited that they see that in me, I know that I have a lot of potential to do it and also many things to improve, but that is what the evolutionary process is about, and with all my heart I am going to do my best to bring the crown to Peru," said Calmell.
Calmell is a fervent defender of various social causes and campaigns such as the Dulces que Cumplen Deseos campaign by the company La Ibérica and Make-A-Wish Peru. She has been an activist for years and thanks to her work as Miss International Peru, she has been able to associate with and be an ambassador for organizations such as the Peruvian League to Fight Cancer, Beauties for SDGs, Corazones Verdes Mundial, etc., providing support to various regions of her country.
In addition, she participated in the International Forum of Women Entrepreneurs in Japan and created a project at the Colegio Divino Niño Jesús, which offers specialized education and physical and mental rehabilitation for children, and due to her economic limitations, she decided to support them to improve their education, encouraging citizens to support them as well.
As the second runner-up of the Miss International pageant, she was able to go, along with the other finalists of the pageant's honor roll, to the UNICEF offices in Japan, and they raised their voice in favor of the various causes related to children's rights, in addition, they donated all the money raised with the net sales of the souvenir items brought by the delegates from around the world that were sold during the final gala.
After her reign, she continued working with these campaigns and associations, partnering with more organizations and becoming an ambassador for the Ronald McDonald House and the Ministry of the Environment. In addition, she launched campaigns such as Less Plastic, More Life in collaboration with these organizations and the Maria Reina de la Esperanza School, with which she has been working and supporting for years.
As Miss Peru 2024, she has committed to continue working on social projects focused on education and the empowerment of young women in rural areas, and her mission is not only to continue to be associated with these projects, but also to continue to be an agent of change, "I want to be someone who changes the reality of our country, there are many problems to solve today and if we do not take action now, very few things will change," said Calmell.14
