Terminology; reversed meaning?

§ Optical says

Lateral scattering by the air along the light beam is quantified as an attenuation coefficient. Any departure from the clear air extinction coefficient (e.g. in fog) is measured and is proportional to the visibility.


  1. What's the difference, if any, between attenuation coefficient and extinction coefficient?
  2. The wording of the second sentence means that the greater the departure from clear air, the greater the extinction coefficient, which increases in proportion to visibility. In other words, the less clear the air is, the better the visibility. That sure looks backwards: it should probably say "inversely proportional".

Extinction coefficient and attenuation coefficient are the same in meteorology. You are right about the wording, I changed it to be clearer. Pierre cb (talk) 12:36, 21 October 2017 (UTC)Reply
