Some questions have come up on another discussion board about the "adaptable range" maps in the Sabal minor and Rhapidophyllum hystrix articles. Unfortunately the maps are unattributed, there is no indication of where the information in them comes from, and as they stand they are completely unverifiable. They almost certainly consistute original research. I believe they should be deleted, unless the editor who put them in can provide a clear and verifiable reference for where they came from. Although Sabal minor occurs in North Carolina not far from the border with Virginia, and thus might be expected in the latter state, the nativity of Sabal minor in Virginia has been subject of much conjecture and misinformation. There is no documentation or credible evidence that Sabal minor is, or ever was, native anywhere in Virginia. The Physiography of Virginia reference does NOT state that Sabal minor occurs in Virginia. It states (in a footnote) that Great Dismal Swamp represents the northern limit of this species, but Great Dismal Swamp extends well into North Carolina, where the distribution of this species is very well documented. 160.111.254.17 (talk) 13:20, 30 March 2017 (UTC)Reply

Every couple of months, people edit this article to add either Kansas or Virginia as part of its native range. The motivations behind these edits are unclear. It would be extremely exciting for the botanical community if such a disjunct population was documented. But alas, no reliable sources have been provided.
