Plutarch's a pretty disreputable source to just believe wholeheartedly, and anyway, the citations really need to be more specific than they are. This thing is a real mess.--CaesarGJ (talk) 00:23, 27 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]__DTELLIPSISBUTTON__{"threadItem":{"timestamp":"2008-02-27T00:23:00.000Z","author":"CaesarGJ","type":"comment","level":2,"id":"c-CaesarGJ-2008-02-27T00:23:00.000Z-Plutarch_as_a_Source","replies":[]}}-->
Alcibiades was renown for his ostentation, which makes the point claiming that people favoured Alcibiades because Nicias was an aristocrat moot. If anything Cleon was a demagogue as much for his speaking as for his status as the son of a tanner. Source that point, because it contravenes 90% of what I know to be true in the period. I'll improve the section when I have more time in two weeks.
After reviewing much of this article I've determined that the quality of writing here, which is fair, needs some certain reworking. I've noticed there have been very few contributers to this article which I am certain exacerbates the issue.

This article is highly misinformed when it comes to the Sicilian Campaign, at the very least. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Burnthetown (talk • contribs) 20:11, 21 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]__DTELLIPSISBUTTON__{"threadItem":{"timestamp":"2008-02-21T20:11:00.000Z","author":"Burnthetown","type":"comment","level":1,"id":"c-Burnthetown-2008-02-21T20:11:00.000Z-Ostracizing_Hyperbolus","replies":[]}}-->

This article seems to choose a positive bias towards Nicias as a military leader. I don't think that such a view is so obvious. As I remember it, Thucydides seems to put some blame on Nicias for the problems in the Sicilian Expedition; it was his piety that prevented him from acting at a crucial moment over concern for an eclipse (choosing effectively not to lead for 27 days), and which likely cost the Athenians victory here and plausibly in the war at large. This seemed like fairly explicit condemnation in Thucydides, so I am not sure how Nicias ends up on this page as such a solid commander. The Sicilian Expedition makes some of the above points. Do people on this page have some vested interest in protecting his legacy 2,500 years later?
