A marque is a "make" in the brand sense. E.g. Ford, Mercury, Lincoln are all marques, but they are not makes; all of them are made by the Ford Motor Company, sometimes in the same factory. —Morven 05:44, Sep 30, 2004 (UTC)

I disagree. It is not a qualitative statement but a quantitative one: Lexus is one of the most successful marques in terms of vehicle sales in the world. I re-read the article and fail to see much POV about it... --SFoskett 16:47, Dec 6, 2004 (UTC)

This article flat out states that marque is a brand of automobile - that's not how I know the word (I know it from Milk Marque orginally), but I don't believe it has to be to do with cars. My dictionary says "a brand of product, esp. of a car" Tompagenet 09:01, 5 Mar 2005 (UTC)

It would be fair to say that non-car uses are mostly obsolete and fairly rare. There already IS a link to letter of marque, right at the top. However, it probably should be stated that it CAN mean a brand in general, but is more frequently used for cars than anything else. —Morven 20:09, Mar 5, 2005 (UTC)
