The article switches between the plural form "the Kiowa" and "the Kiowas". I believe the former is the prefered form, but does anyone have a reference? -- Kaszeta 14:14, 4 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Hi.

I think that this depends on your English. Some may like either, some may prefer one over the other. Like,

1. The Germans are a proud people.
2. The German are a proud people.

Some people will probably except both. Others may find one awkward. Some of these are more rigid, like Japanese:

1. ??The Japaneses are a proud people.
2. The Japanese are a proud people.

For me (and maybe most), Japaneses is sounds rather bad. What about the following?

1. The Iraqi are a proud people.
2. The Iraquis are a proud people.

There is probably a continuum of acceptability regarding the grammaticality of these nouns, which means there will be disagreements among speakers. There are many Englishes throughout the world.

You can compare other ethnic/nationality names:

• Apache vs. Apaches
• Inuit vs. Inuits
• Bantu vs. Bantus
• Twi vs. Twis
• Navajo vs. Navajos

Historically depends upon the century. After that they also migrated according to the hunting cycle. Typically from the Northern Missouri basin and the Dakotas (around the Canadian border), south to Oklahoma and Texas. West they did not venture past the Rocky mts. , and East to Kansas and Nebraska. I had a link to the Wikipedia entry for Jesse Ed Davis a while ago, but I see it has been removed. I understand his art is not directly related to the Kiowa culture, so I understand the removal.

Still, I think it a shame that no mention is included of him, or other well-known Kiowa personalities who may be out there. Would it be inappropriate to add a new section of "well known Kiowa personalities", to include links to musicians -- I would include Davis of course :-) -- and others who are elsewhere in Wikipedia?

I suggest expanding the paragraph on musicians in the section under Kiowa art. I don't know what link you had entered here, but if it was a fansite link like the one at Jesse Ed Davis it will be removed. An internal link in the mention of his name to that Wiki page would be appropriate, but links here should be bio info only. I am still debating whether the Stroud and Flett bios are OK. Mention of the Kiowa influence in their work is good, but I'm not sure about linking to their info outside of Wiki. Flett's influence is plains art in general, while Stroud is specifically Kiowa, although in recent years she has depicted the Cherokee culture as well.

On searching Wiki I found Davis info here, here, and the best bio info here. "Kiowa refer to themselves as Kgoy-goo [kaw-eh-goo [pronounced] or 'koy-goo' [short]} meaning, "the principal people", in their tribal language."

Can anyone clean this up? An IPA transcription would be clearer than this notation. I cannot find any online sources for what has been going on with the Kiowa government - if anyone editing this article can find any sources that would be fantastic. Native American Times, Indian Country Today, the Daily Oklahoman, and the Grady Country Express Star came up negative and unfortunately the Anadarko Daily News is not online. But Kiowa friends inform me that Donald Topfi was recalled as tribal chairman. He challenged the recall and attempted to run for reelection but was declared ineligible (due to the recall). The BIA suspended the election but the election committee and hearing board went ahead, saying it was too late to cancel. The BIA does not recognize the results and regard the election as illegal, and now the feds are investigating the situation. Apparently Topfi is left as the acting chairman. If his position is contested, I can any mention of a tribal chairman, pending any secondary sources dealing with the matter. Lawton Constitution has some info. There is not a single number.

• 11,500 is the tribal enrollment as of 2010.
• 8,559 is the US Census results for 2000 that give Kiowa as the only race.
• 9,689 is the US Census results for 2000 that are Kiowa only, or Kiowa and another tribe as the only race.
• 10,678 is the US Census results for 2000 that are Kiowa only, or part Kiowa and part non-indian race.
• 12,242 is the US Census results for 2000 that are Kiowa only, or Kiowa and another tribe, or Kiowa and another non-indian race, or Kiowa and another tribe and another non-indian race.

The section on the Kiowa language is backed by one of the most respected sources available on the indigenous languages of North America, and the changes that have been done to it are uncited and in clear contradiction to what reliable sources say. As for the recent wave of edits, large amounts of sourced and relevant information was removed without explanation, and the formatting and organization of the page was badly damaged. If there is a reason for the information about Kiowa social structure, history etc. being removed, please discuss it here, and take care with the mechanics of edits. Many citations on this article are incomplete and sloppy (newspapers listed with no article title, link, or author; authors with no further explanation, etc.) Some longstanding "citations" in this article need some explanation or verification. These include "NAS by Marilyn Yeahquo, 1980", "The Kiowa by U.S. Department of Interior, Southern Plains Indian Museum, 1994.", "NAS by Marilyn Reid, 1980," and "Kiowa History by Evans R. Satepauhoodle, TU, 2004". Having googled the authors' names, these are not published books or websites. Are the pamphlets or articles? If no explanation is furnished, I'm going to go ahead an delete them, since they appear to be original research.
