Q1: Which name is best: ISIS, ISIL, Daesh, Islamic State or something else?
A: This article's title is decided according to Wikipedia's article titles policy.
The discussion that resulted in the current name Islamic State was held in August–September 2021. The decision followed WP:Commonname section of WP:Article titles. This question has been raised over 40 times on the talk page, without any proposal other than the September 2021 and August 2013 discussions resulting in a page move. Now archived, those discussions can be read here and searched here. Past names, both used and considered, have included: "Islamic State of Iraq and Syria", "Islamic State of Iraq and (al-)Sham", "Islamic State of Iraq and Greater Syria", "Islamic State", "The Islamic State", "Islamic State (Middle East)" and "Islamic State (Organisation)". |

In the section "The group has perpetrated terrorist massacres in territories outside of its control, such as the November 2015 Paris attacks, the 2024 Kerman bombings in Iran, the 2024 Crocus City Hall attack in Russia, the Hanukkah massacre of Jews on Bondi beach in Australia and the knifing of Jews outside a British synagogue on Yom Kippur" on the introductory page, "the Hanukkah massacre of Jews on Bondi beach in Australia and the knifing of Jews outside a British synagogue on Yom Kippur" should be changed to "the 2025 Bondi Beach shooting and the 2025 Manchester synagogue attack", assuming that these two are the attacks being referred to here. Slogan section reduction
Shahada is ultimately the “slogan” for all muslims, not limited to ISIS. I believe something should be done about this, since I believe this might lead to misunderstandings in some interactions between non-muslim and muslim people. Obviously, if this harms the article. Change the ideology from Islamic Statism to Daeshism
"Islamic Statism" is problematic since be misinterpreted as an Islamic variant of Statism or as advocating for the concept of a form of government based on sharia law. Also, "Daeshism" already used by multiple sources[1][2][3]. ManU9827 (talk) 06:32, 22 April 2026 (UTC)
- The first and second links to sources you posted are not working. Could you please provide the correct links? Day Creature (talk) 15:33, 22 April 2026 (UTC)
- I took them from the Ideology of the Islamic State page, The second source is deprecated, so ignore it, and the first may only be accessible from Iranian IPs? In any case the term "Islamic Statism" is problematic for the reasons mentioned before and since there are no sources which use it (suggesting its a neologism that originates from the ideology page). Improper wording for attacks perpetrated by ISIS
In regards to the following section:
The group has perpetrated terrorist massacres in territories outside of its control, such as the November 2015 Paris attacks, the 2024 Kerman bombings in Iran, the 2024 Crocus City Hall attack in Russia, the 2025 Bondi Beach shooting in Australia and 2025 Manchester synagogue attack on Yom Kippur.
I believe this is incorrect and misleading. While the Paris, Kerman and Crocus City Hall attacks are obviously ISIS perpetrated, there is currently nothing indicating the Bondi beach shooting and Manchester attack were “perpetrated” by ISIS themselves. In fact, in the source used for the sentence the title quite literally says “inspired” referring to the Bondi attack. While both attacks were obviously inspired, these two attacks should be removed or replaced. Aussienerddawg (talk) 05:26, 25 April 2026 (UTC)
- Good point, thank you, I read the source and changed the text. Lova Falk (talk) 16:37, 4 May 2026 (UTC)
- On second thought, I deleted it - the lead is big enough as it is. Lova Falk (talk) 16:44, 4 May 2026 (UTC)
