Although in Sanskrit the word hari means yellow this meaning is not applicable in this case. Hari usually is understood as one who takes away. The name Hari is of Hindu and Sanskrit origin. Hari is a name of Lord Vishnu from the Vishnu Sahasranama. Apart from God, it also means "lion" in sanskrit.

Hari means "the remover." When one remembers His name and repeats it, sins, karmas and bad astrological effects are steadily erased. This is the power of the name of Hari. The name also has the force to reduce ignorance. The reduction of illusion culminates in the deathless state when birth and death cease. The most famous mantra is Hari OM. Its essential meaning is that Hari is OM. As OM is the primordial cosmic vibration from which sprang the entire cosmos and all creation, we can thus understand a fraction of drive greatness of Hari. Hari Om is a universal mantra and contains within itself the cosmic vibration.

Hari refers to all the love and consciousness that is embodied in Creation. OM in a single syllable signifies the origin, continuation and finale of all that exists.

Just as the fire, on contacting an object, automatically burns it, so the name of Hari takes away (harati) or burns up all the sins of the people with materialistic hearts. It removes (harati) all ignorance and reveals the transcendental, blissful form of the Lord. Also, 'hari' means that personality who attracts (harati) the minds of all the people in the universe when they hear stories of His transcendental qualities; or, He who attracts the minds of people by His beautiful youthful form.

Chanting the name of Hari has a great spiritual effect. It has a tremendous spiritual vibration and is effectively used in japa (repeating prayers) and kirtan (repeating the names in the form of devotional songs). "Hari bol, Hari bol!"…sing the name of Hari has been the advice of many great saints throughout Hindu history.

Well there are two other meanings of Hari, one from Sikhism and another from Farsi (Persian language). Hari is pronounced 'har' as 'i' is silent in Gurumukhi script and as per Santhia (way to read Gurbani(Verse of God)). Hari is Sustainer, Benefitter and Reviver. Like when we put water in dry plant and the plant becomes green, we say that it has become Harit(meaning green). So it is symbol of sustenance of life and that is God. While in Farsi, Harr means everyone, as God is inside everyone, therefore everyone is God.
